Heater fan resistor pack

Post by Tim S » Sun Dec 30, 2012 9:02 pm

Hi all

Fairly sure the heater resistor pack on my Elise has failed - it only works at max speed now.

I understand from instructions given on Elise wiki that the pack's hidden underneath the heater fan casing, so I set about last week digging about trying to remove the heater matrix and the fan...and failed! I couldn't lift the matrix out far enough to get the fan out. This was all with the clam still on so...before I take the clam off, with all that faff, then probably break the matrix box trying to remove it, can anyone actually confirm that the resistor pack is where I think it is?? I'd hate to go to all the trouble then find it's somewhere else!

And any other advice about doing the job gratefully received.

Many thanks

Tim

I booked mine into MMC to get it done next week ... if my resistor pack is any use and ends up spare you can have it and I'll ask Craig where it came from too :-)

Cheers,
Robin

Hi Robin

That sounds ominous - a job so tricky that you've booked it in to MMC!! Yes, would be good to hear from them where it is - and also to know how much they'll charge to do the job.

Cheers

Tim

There is a writeup on how to change it with the clam still on somewhere on here. I think it was t tenkfeet who did it - would do a search but I'm on my phone. I think that was on a car without aircon though

I'm sure there's another one - that one involved taking the clam off but refers to the "through the service panel" method towards the end

I seem to recall someone on here managing to replace theirs without removing the clam. I thought it was 10kfeet but had a quick search and couldn't find it. I think it was possibly a K series car and was still a complete PITA to do.

In my last exige I asked MMC to do it as a precaution when my windscreen got replaced (which was a clam off job)

Possibly me. As mentioned at the end of one of the links, I followed the main parts of JohnCams write up, but did everything through the service panel.

If the pics arent clear, it is located almost central, but slightly towards the passenger side right up against the bulkhead, in a low position sitting virtually on the floor (hence why they fail as it pools with water down there).

My car didnt have AC - think that might be a clam off job. It was a real pig of a job and involved lots of swearing, frustration, patience and skint knuckles...but do-able. Great feeling afterwards though in a sort of B&Q "I did that" sort of way :)

As I mentioned at the time, I was told that stock of replacement resistors were being run down in favour fo the complete pack which sits higher up. Doesnt change the job too much as the main pain is removing and reseating the fan unit.

Hi Tim,

It's not so much that I think the job is really tough - more that I never have the time to actually do anything on the car and with what MMC charge to do it I cannot see the point in wasting my time on it. Oh, and they wash the car too ;-)

Cheers,
Robin

Thanks for the help guys.

Johncam's and tenkfeet's descriptions v helpful - though I just couldn't get the fan rotated. Will have another go...

Cheers

Tim
