Speed related noise form the front

Post by Sanjøy » Sun Sep 17, 2006 8:24 am

Noticed it this morning on way to work. Not had a chance to look her over.
Speed related noise, sounds like a rotational noise. Pretty loud at 80.

No degredation in braking
No vibration
Steering is straight

Thoughts ?

Wheel balance weight hitting the caliper?
Stone in caliper or behind the splash shield?
Brake pad rattling in caliper (I had this problem when I had an uneven disk that was picking up the pad and smacking it into the top of the caliper, then letting it drop down again.

I would jack up each side and spin the wheels to see if you can reproduce the noise.

Cheers,
Robin

Wheel bearing if the noise is constant.

Probably be a bearing, mine failed on the front at 25k so at 60 your doing not bad. Even though you have no play when wiggling the wheel(diagonallys) if you spin the wheel you will prob hear/feel a grinding. Bearings are the same as a montego td so only about 25 quid each. Cheers Craig.

Phoned the AA, covered by my AA Parts & Labour. Need to have a call which is silly though.

Hmm better accept Brunty as part of my servicing from last year!

"It is a strange noise and I pulled over as I was worried something bad might happen. As you know I am based in London and it would be nusafe to drive 400 miles like this at mway speed"

"Very wise sir"

"I call a garage who knowledgeably told me it was 80% the bearings"

"Very good sir, if you call our man he will concurr this and then recover teh car to your garage of choice"

Brunty wasnt VAT registered and it is one of the stipulations of the AA warranty. Fingers crossed they dont spy it (but to be honest a bearing change in my S1 cost me less than 50quid so not the end of the world if they say no)

Who did that for 50 quid? It costs 3/4 of that just for the bearing/circlips/hub nut and its at least a 2 hour job.

2 hours for a front wheel bearing?

I removed the upright and took it to a local garage who got and pressed in the bearing, I then put it back together again, so thats probably the cheapest way of doing it and why it was cheap. I know Sanjoy likes cheapest options as do i
