Sorry, I know Im nothing but question after question at the moment! But I need to source a new starter motor as mine seems to fail about 1 time in 3, I just get a click from the solenoid.
Mines a 2002 120bhp k series lump.

Im looking on ebay for a rover 1.4kw, but most sellers dont list the kw rating.

Im told things like a1.8 freelander part will fit, but the more I look into it, the more confusing it becomes.....there are loads of starters with lesser kw ratings, but its a struggle to make sure you get a 1.4kw version...

Apart from paying double the Ebay prices at Eliseparts, anyone have any idea where I can source one? Id be happy buying off Ebay, but like I say, confirming the KW rating is difficult.
Does anyone maybe know the Rover part number(s) ....maybe I can source one that way?

You need a 1.4Kw one, it was changed around '98 from the 1.0 Kw.

Any 1.8K engine will do the job, the MGF one is the same also, loads of them on eBay, used at £20, new at £50.

I am not sure about "any" 1.8K engine - the gearbox and flywheel need to be the same mounts/dimensions in order for it to work - so MGF is very likely OK as same PG1 gearbox, whereas freelander, which is most likely a different gearbox/flywheel, who knows?

freelander is ok it also uses the pg1 , beware the zr / rover 25/45 as some ( lower power ) use the ford ib5 gearbox with its starter bolted to the front of the engine
Another option is a motor factors maybe even an exchange rebuilt one with warranty ?

I guess the biggest area of confusion for me is this.....

My starter motor has part number bosch 0 001 107 080 on it.

When I look on Ebay for starters with that part number, they come back as 1.1kw - I understood that the starters for a 2002 1.8 k series had to be 1.4kw.... Thats were Im getting really confused?

Probably just because it cross references to that same part number because it "fits". The bigger question is would you believe it to be a 1.4KW starter, just because it says so on ebay

Of course the 1.1KW starter will most likely work, so in a sense you shouldn't care too much about the 1.1 vs 1.4 thing - but if you really want something that is original then make sure you get the actual part.

Alternately your starter has failed in the past and been replaced with the wrong part, hence the misleading part number lookups now.

BTW, the starter you list on ebay is being sold on alibaba for $29 - of course you have to buy 20, but you can probably decide for yourself that this part is not going to be that much like the original Bosch item in terms of materials or workmanship

i was just listing the example part to show how confusing it is to try and find the correct rating!

I will try to source a Bosch unit that is 1.4kw. The current starter fails about 1 time in 3 and the car is just a weekend car, so Im not in a massive rush! Alternatively, I could look at trying to find new brushes for the exisitng unit and refurbing it myself.......
It maybe just needs a good clean and regrease?

Quick update...

Found a company on the 'bay, selling the same bosch starter motor as I have currently.
£36 plus £12 delivery, seems a good deal for a genuine bosch item!

When the old one comes out, will strip and clean then see how the bushes are, might be worth a quick refurb.

All sorted, new motor fitted this afternoon.

It was a pretty straightforward job, it took me around 1hr to do. Would have been quicker but its very awkward to get into the mounting bolts and nuts!
