Squeak from rear

Post by Tom » Thu Sep 21, 2006 12:15 pm

Since sorting the exhaust, car has developed an odd squeaking noise. not to bad to start with but seems to be getting worse. Only seems to happen when the car is turning right(any degree of right turning). turning to left = no noise. wondered if possible engine mount that was undone during exhaust gubbins.

anyway, it's getting worse. kind of metallic squeaking, also seems to happen at certain points of the rev band (around 5000revs).

any ideas??

(dom heard it at doune. What you reckon it was dom?)

Digging one up from the past rather than starting a new thread!
I've got a similar thing to this above, squeaking noise coming from the passenger side rear. It speeds up with the wheel speed, only happens when driving straight or turning right, worse when there's more load applied on that corner. Braking doesn't make any difference to it.
My first though was that this could be the wheel bearing, though a quick search seems to say that if it was, then it would be more of a droning noise. It's going for it's MOT on monday so will probably get it sorted out then, just no idea what would be causing it and whether it would be best left alone over the weekend? Not the end of the world if the bearing needs done but would rather get it to the garage than risk busting it badly.
Cheers guys!

Lewis is probably right for Tom's - mine did this and it was the hanger leaning over in cornering and rubbing the cover plate over the rubber (which was shot) Bit of shuffling should fix it.

As for Ian's, doesn't sound the same issue at all. Could be a rubbing brake line (although that's usually a scrape, not a squeak) Bearings rumble, as you say. First thought would be something brake pad related but you say braking doesn't cure it, so unlikely to be that.... Unless a stone caught in the caliper area somehow (usually happens on the front, never had it on the rear) Odd - the MOT tester will swing off everything, so should find it. Check the brake line isn't touching, if it's not that, I can't think of anything catastrophic.

Just fitted a new exhaust to my S2 and had a squeeking noise which was the exhaust silencer rubbing on the heat shield at the back. This would happen at idle or under certain conditions when the exhaust moved. Sorted it now by rotating the exhaust slightly. It was also catching the diffuser so just trimmed a bit off that.

Bizarrely I have this issue too after a recent exhaust change. High pitched constant noise on right hand corners.

I was woried it was a bearing but sounded too high pitched. I know one of the exhaust hangers was a bit tight/squint, so will check that out.

One of the regular squeeks from the rear of Elise based vehicles is the handbrake cable where it passes through the bracket - small piece of hosepipe strategically wrapped at the point where it goes through the hangar sorts it a treat. I was on my fourth Elise before I read about it. Had previously put up with it as TADTS.
Obviously not exhaust related though but it does away with one of the annoying noises. :thumbsup

My post was dug up from 2006 (when no-one replied   ). It was indeed the coverplate over the rubber exhaust mount. I ignored it until it stopped which was I assume the correct level of adjustment/wear for this part. The reason for this was my exhaust was out of alignment. Lasted for nearly 4 years till the hanger broke at which point some welding was needed. Sorted now though :thumbsup .

Oh yeah, and thanks you lot for waiting 4 years to reply

 I'm just used to searching and using old threads thanks to the internet police on pistonheads...
Well, I found a couple brake pipe clips were loose, got them tightened up but didn't make any difference. Nothing else everything else seems fine on the corners. The exhaust heatshield has come loose at the top though, makes a little noise moving it by hand so will try get that sorted out and see whether that makes a difference. I guess I'm just getting started in the endless hunt for squeaks and rattles though!

Sorry for the slow reply,... I think I can remember the squeak in question. My estimation is that it is maybe an engine mount  . Do you still have it?

Spent the afternoon farting about with various bits of the car. Got the heat shielding fixed, but rear passenger side wheel has a small amount of play in it. Strange though if it shouldn't be causing the squeaking?
At least I did something instead of sitting in front of the TV!
