S2 Instrument Binnacle Problem
S2 Instrument Binnacle Problem
Hi there,
I collected my 2008 Elise S 4 weeks ago and not had any problems until Wednesday morning when I was driving round to my parents for a lift to the airport to head to work. It was a little wet outside but not too bad, everything was working perfectly and I stopped at Tesco for a few bits and bobs, when I got back in the car I turned on the ignition to find that the Instrument binnacle did not light up. It was 3am and I wasn't sure if my eyes were playing up so I turned the ignition off and back on again. Still no lights on the dash.
I then drove for about a mile and pulled over, turned the ignition off again for about 5 mins and then back on. Still the problem was there.
I then continued on to my parents where the car is now stored for 4 weeks.
To summarise the problem, I have no lights on the instrument binnacle and the speedo and rev counter do not operate, the heater controls do not light up, however the air con light does. The Engine start button lights, and so do the headlight switches etc.
I have not had any time to investigate this due to it happening on my way to work so I was wondering if anybody has any ideas as to what the issue could be?
The car has already had an instrument binnacle replaced after about a year, but I don't know any details of the symptoms prior to this, and this issue seems to affect more than just the instruments. I'm hoping possibly it is simply a blown fuse, or maybe a little water ingress somewhere.
Any help would be very much appreciated.
Cheers,
Steve

I would guess it's a fuse. Though I don't have a wiring diagram for your car so cannot be sure.

I've experienced similar symptoms - no speedo, etc although iirc the immobiliser light was on. Car still drove though.
Try disconnecting the battery, waiting a minute or two, then reconnecting it again.
Worked for me.

Would a stack reset not fix this?
- Turn off the ignition
- Open the driver's door (yes, really!)
- Press and hold the trip-meter reset button
- Whilst still holding the reset button turn the key in the ignition to the second position (just before the engine turns)

Thanks for the suggestons, i'll give them a go when i get home. I'll have to try and source a wiring diagram from somewhere, for future reference at least.
Cheers.

You missed the bit where you have to simultaneously rub your belly, pat your head and shout 'STACK, STACK, STACK' as loud as you canneil wrote:Would a stack reset not fix this?

Don't know if you've been on SELOC or not?S6GGO wrote:Thanks for the suggestons, i'll give them a go when i get home. I'll have to try and source a wiring diagram from somewhere, for future reference at least.

Good info there in the TechWiki.
Probably got a wiring diagram but I haven't checked.
Re: S2 Instrument Binnacle Problem
I'm just going to have a look SELOC now. I get home on Thursday evening, so hopefully the problem will be sorted by the weekend.
Thanks for the replies.

I have no idea how the unit is connected, but, at a guess,... if it was replaced as you say in the past year, then possibly a connector has come detached? ..
Re: S2 Instrument Binnacle Problem
I think it was after a year of the car being new, not in the past year. However, you could be right, and it is worth a look. I read on SELOC that somebody had a similar problem and disconnecting then reconnecting the battery solved the issue, so I'll be giving that a go too.
