Fuel filter surround screws

Aaarrrgh! I thought i would enhance the car my buying a black surround for the fuel cap, seeing the original was scratched. I have ever torq screw out except one which is rounded off!

Ive tried a larger torq socket, hammered it, tried drilling and broke two drill bits and the f"@!er wont move. Ive now scratched the paint too

Any advice, other than in future leave the car as it should be

Been there, in fact still there! with the end of an Allen key broken off in one of the heads . I gave up screwed the others back in and left it as it was

How good are the screw extractors? Think I may try and source one and give it a go.

So annoying as it's supposed to be a simple removal

Extractor should make short work of it. When you find suitable replacement screws could you post up as I need a new set too after having similar problem but had limited replacement options at the time.

The scews for the filler cap surround are Screw, M5 x 25, csk. skt. hd. S/S or a No6 x 1/2" set screw csk depending on either Toyota or K series.

Same happened to me, only 1 bolt was a problem and I scratched the bodywork through lack of patience and turning a 1hr job into hours, feel your pain.
Extractor didn't work out for me either so drilled out screw which took ages and a few drill bits.

For listing of every Elise parts use this site, it is really useful. You can buy from them but postage makes it expensive to buy screws but at least it tells you exactly what to buy somewhere else.

Went to autoparts today and bought some draper extractors : complete fail, useless. Ended up putting all the bolts back in and will leave it along for a week. Getting the car detailed tomorrow so would have liked the black surround fitted:-(

Sorry to hear that. On the S1 the screws are only into the fibreglass so there shouldn't be too much holding onto them.

If anyone finds a neat solution please let me know. Like others I have a black surround in the garage awaiting a solution. Tried to fit it more than a year ago and gave up with 3 'welded' in screws. Even considered heating with a mini blow torch....

Why isit so difficult - and the s/s bolts are solid and difficult to drill through without the risk of snapped bit and scratched bodywork
