A non starter....

I drove to Aberdeen yesterday. Left the car for 4 hours and when I came back it wouldn't start. Plenty of battery power, turning over ok but not catching. The one thing that I did notice was that I couldn't hear the fuel pump whining on ignition. This happened once before and it was the fuel cut off switch. Tried that but no joy.

Ended up getting towed back to Glasgow. Got the car off the trailer and it started first time!!

Any ideas? I don't want to be stuck again.

Dicky MFRU? (Multi Function Relay Unit) It's got the relay for the fuel pump in there. That, or the cut of switch itself may be dodgy.

OK, so I read your sig and see it's an S1 111s.

This car has a cam and crank position sensor which if they're out won't let the car start. It would however not prevent the fuel pump running. Are you sure the fuel pump wasn't running? It could be dodgy immobiliser relay (which is buried in a safe to prevent you tampering with it - they do fail). It could also be the MFRU (Multi Function Relay Unit) or the fuse for the FP (unlikely as it ran later) or dodgy wiring on any of the above - the FP takes quite a lot of current, so any duff connections will corrode and deteriorate quite quickly.

Just back from my friend who owns spanners!

He cleaned the MFRU and the inertia switch. There was a bit of dry solder on the mfru which he cleaned up. Put it all back together and everything seems fine.

BUT....

When I stopped outside my house, I noticed my revs were sitting at 1400 at idle. Tried reving it to see if it settled and switched on and off. Still high.
Related or a new problem? :?
