Just wondering if anyone's done this and if so can it be done with a set of chocolate spaners and no real grasp of the internal combustion engine? :?

Mac's got the 165 kit - he's a pretty well qualified greasemonkey, and I believe had another well qualified gent with him as spannerman when he did his. Its a head changeover - so you'll need to know a fair bit about how to take engines apart.... oh yeah, and put them back together again ;)

I fitted one of these to my old S1 and helped fit another to an early S2.

Well worth the money and a good conversion - right now PTP will fit the complete kit (intake, head, exhaust and perhaps the free-flow cat?) for 2,500 including VAT - but you need to get them to fit it at their place near coventry and you need to book it in before the end of the month (though it doesn't have to get done this month).

It's easy enough to fit, but you will need the manual and some skillz. If you mess it up you could seriously damage your engine - only you will know if you feel competent to do it ...

Cheers,
Robin

A head swap took 3 of us, John Reid, Shug and me, around 14 hours or so over 2 days, but you will have to paint John Reid's shed afterwards!*

We were not entirely incompetent with spanners but lacked some essential knowledge on occasions also you will require a few odd tools such as the torx bit for the head bolts. I reckon with an experienced team you could do it in a day or less. Inexperienced or underconfident (Or not brave) then I would give it a miss DIY. There really is alot to remember and alot to check and double check. Don't get me wrong it was a good thing to do DIY and we all learned a great deal but I would definatly seek help from one of the old hands. It was incredibly rewarding to start it up for the first time and realise we hadn't bent any valves (Don't ask!) and hadn't missed anything major (only the alternator bolt!) But there was always the chance we had made a mistake and scrapped the engine.

*I am extemely grateful to John Reid (and the Sh*g!) for the help, loan of the driveway, the endless tea and the bacon rolls, helping to paint your shed was the least I could do!

Well it's a good job my Dad's a greasemoney.

Here's the plan:

1. Order Kit.

2. Strip the engine at me dad's place ideally right outside the family homes front door.

3.Abandon project due to lack of technical talent, right outside front door of course.

4. Plead absolute ineptitude.

5. Listen to Father's outbursts about eyesores, driveways etc.

6. Plead absolute ineptitude.

7.RESULT!! Old man so Pi**ed off he finnishes my half a**ed effort.

That's the theory??

You need to show him that its faster than his evo then even being 200bhp down. that'll get right up his nose.

Err, you can break the engine stripping it down, so I would just do something like remove ECU lead, which results in same immobile car but with much less probability of breaking anything :-)

I am sure we can get a head-fitting session going at some point over the winter months, though seeing as how you're on the other side of the country I think you'll be wanted to speak to Mac+Shug about that ... (ducks for cover) :-)

Is that for a ported head (standard head scoope out)?

The good thing about the PTP kit is that it's that the head has been cast with the bigger ports etc.
