Performance upgrades on new order

Hi All,
I've ordered my Elise today and have gone for the 1.6. My only reservation is that it may be quite quiet (factory visit is being arranged to help firm up details of my order)
With that in mind The exhaust and air box mod was mentioned at Murray. What's the thoughts on this option?
Cheers,
Paul.

Not sure on a nice new one but sometimes air box mods can make the cab quite noisey, or it certainly can on old ones like mine. Worth checking as 5 mins can sound cool, 100 miles can be less than fun.
Obviously that may have no bearing on a spanking new 1.6.

Having had one of his systems on an Elise R, it's worth looking at what's available from Jim Valentine/2Bular.

My brother has the air box on his 1.6, certainly sounds better for it and has a nice throaty roar when pressing on.
Shouldn't be a problem on longer journeys as it's only really loud on full throttle

Get a 2bular on it.

I've got the 1.8 Toyota.
Was going to buy a 2bular but Craig at MMC suggested fitting the exhaust from an SC (2nd hand but mint) and a TRD air filter.
It's now got a bit more volume and character at idle and a really aggressive roar when accelerating hard. No real difference when cruising normally.
Perfect for me, probably not loud enough for Saj!

Can't recall what exhaust's on mine but a wee bit noisy at a brisk cruise, went main road recently for approx 100 miles and should've put earplugs in,not a nice tone at a constant speed.
TRD airbox highly recommended though, great sound when you want it and un-noticeable at a cruise.

Looking back at the ad when I bought my car the exhaust is described as;
2ubular GT3 back box.......haven't had the " pleasure" of hearing it from kerbside at full noise but a wee bit droney at constant throttle on motorway....can easily live with it though as car doesn't live on motorway often and use earplugs as ex-biker.

I've spec'd it with the 'Power Pack' so we'll see what like. The ideal would be to have the set up on a car at the factory but I can't see that. Never know though.
This'll be used as a commuter and everyday car (as the Porsche is now) so not wanting it to be unbearably noisy but, at the same time, don't want it sounding like a sewing machine. The 1.8s that we took out at Murray was waaay too loud for my wife to live with and isn't the sort of thing that I'd find very rewarding on a motorway cruise.
Thanks for your input folks.

What exhaust & filter was the 1.8 fitted with? They are quite quiet as standard.
Have you driven a 1.6? Despite the claims of similar power & torque to the 1.8 it's a totally different driving experience. The 1.6 needs to be rev'd hard to maximise the performance, the 1.8 has a much better spread of torque and is much more flexible. It's a much better drive in my view.

Worth pointing out that all 2bulars are not the same as well. Elaine's S2 has always had Lotus backboxes on it (Stage 2, when it was naturally aspirated, Stage 3 as part of the Supercharger upgrade) The Stage 2 was horribly droney, but discovered that it was completely shot anyway when it came off. Stage 3 is still okay, but I don't have huge expectations of it's longevity.
Jim at 2bular does a variety of styles and specs and can make one to your requirements. If the stage 3 wasn't part of the incredible deal Craig did us on the Supercharger upgrade, then we'd have been calling Jim, for sure.

I've yet to drive the 1.6 (going on a factory visit to remedy that) but in the unlikely event that I don't like it I can pull my order.
As I've said, this is to be used as an everyday car, so my wife pulling up into the school carpark in a car that roars like the bars of f*** isn't too appropriate and my commute is just that, a drive through to work. If however I do want a more spirited drive then I don't mind having to work for it. I've had a few nice and/or fast cars over the years. The one I look back least fondly on is the Impreza Turbo and the one I like the most is a tie between the Boxster and the Fabia vRS.
I kind of see the Elise sitting somewhere in between those two. Topless fun with a bit of economy thrown in for good measure, looks the part but without too many compromises.
Time will tell if I'm right or not.

No question it's still an excellent car. Based on your own needs, it's likely to be spot on.
