Does this make sense to anyone, who can point me in the right direction of replacements? I need to get them ASAP
Engine mouting woes
Engine mouting woes
Got a call from JD motors just now, engine mounts haven't actually gone it appears, but it's difficult to describe what actually has. He said that on the timing belt side, there is a bracket/alloy housing/flange that secures the mount to the actual block itself, which is secured with 2 M14/M16 bolts. These bolts are what have sheared (which he's never seen) and there is no way of getting them out, so I need to get a replacement bracket/housing/flange and the bolts.

Re: Engine mouting woes
He also said that he thinks later Elises with the K series had the bracket replaced with a 3 bolt style one, rather than the older 2 bolt one that I have, though wasn't entirely sure

Re: Engine mouting woes
Every one I have seen has a two bolt bracket with the big bolts being 18mm spanner size.
They shear when people don't tighten them properly
Once one goes, the other soon follows (twice the load, I guess).
I have some sitting up in Old Deer area but won't be able to access them until the weekend. If you can wait until then I'll strip them off and drop them with you on Saturday as I'll be up anyway.
Failing that I have another set down here in Edinburgh that you could have but you would have to wait for the post ... and I would have to find them ... as it happens I'll be in the garage tonight so I'll have a wee peek to see if they are where they should be; if not, I'll probably not find them until I no longer need them
Will post an update later tonight.
Cheers,
Robin

Re: Engine mouting woes
Hi Robin, if you can find them down there then perfect. Do you have the bracket as well? I need that too. I'm more than happy to pay you for them, and pay for special delivery to JD Motors directly.
Let me know, cheers

Re: Engine mouting woes
Hi Jimbo,
50% success - I have the bracket but not the long M14 bolts that connect the bracket to the chassis side mount. These are:
A111E6008F Bolt, M14 x 2 x 80
Obviously there are 2 of these.
In the short term you could use any M14 x 2 x 80 bolt with a washer (the proper bolt have the sort of head that has a "washer" built in) while you order up the real one. If you swap them one at a time the joint doesn't go loose so it's really easy to change - just need to remove the rear wheel and wheel arch liner.
In the longer term I would suggest ordering new bolts (they are about 4 quid from Lotus - probably £1 anywhere else
). I'll check with MMC if they happen to have any (unlikely) as I will most likely be there tomorrow.
Meanwhile if you send me the address of JD motors I'll send the bracket special delivery so they should receive it by 13:00 on Thursday. I have to go to the post office to get car tax anyway.
Cheers,
Robin

Re: Engine mouting woes
Just looking at Deroure just now, is it part 2 the engine upper mount bracket, to go with part 11 the 2 m14 bolts?

Re: Engine mouting woes
No, item 2 is part of the chassis-side mount - I don't have one of those and I doubt that's the part you've broken.
I have the engine side mount, which is the part that contains the threads that receive items 11 and presumably the part that was damaged when the bolts snapped?
Note: as far as I can see the engine side mount is not shown anywhere on the parts diagrams.
Cheers,
Robin

Re: Engine mouting woes
I'll get the part sent today anyway - if it's not the part they need, they'll know tomorrow. I may or may not have the other side up North ... I would need to take a look to find out, which won't be until Saturday morning.

Re: Engine mouting woes
Good, Craig mentioned that he's getting the bolts - are you going to wait for those or just use some others? I would recommend new bolts of correct type for longevity if at all possible.
Cheers,
Robin
