S2 111s Battery Light

Hi guys, I've just had the battery light start to flicker and then stay on, I assume this is likely to be an alternator issue?

I just checked the voltage of the battery and with the engine off its at 11.9v, engine on and at idle it was 11.6v, it did briefly jump to 13.5v at idle then back to 11.6v, and revving the engine it was at 12.0v,

Can anyone give any tips or suggestions?

Are you going to fix it yourself? I have two alternators that sized if you want to swap the diode packs over and I'm not too far away.

Before you swap the alternator, check that the belt is actually turning the alternator properly - sometimes you get failures on the tensioner bracket such that the belt goes loose. Check the belt is tight.

Also this fault can also be caused by loose or fractured wiring. Eventually this will cause the diode pack to fail as it doesn't like being switched on/off under load.

It doesn't look like too bad a job to swap over and I've done worse when I was a broke student. I'm just trying to decide how lazy or tight I'm feeling, lazy is currently winning! Where is the best place to get a new a alternator if it needs one?

Have a look on eBay its just a rover unit.

Or Partco in Glasgow - they do a lot of Rover /MG stuff.
