DIY Cam timing?

Post by les » Thu Jul 31, 2014 8:20 am

Never having attempted this before, how easy a job is it to do? Any tips or recommended methods?

I've read Rob Bells on cam timing the K series found http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/group2/en ... timing.htm and it looks straight forward enough but...

Cheers

It's been done to an acceptable standard in a driveway with a heath robinson concoction of wood and welding rod (to take repeatable measurements) with a digital vernier gauge, using Dave Andrews lift at TDC method. By idiots (which included me).

It can be found on the K series page here: http://kengine.dvapower.com/

Be careful to lock the flywheel properly, but yeah, it's not that tough, just time consuming to measure 15 times to make sure you're happy. Of course, turn the engine over by hand before trying to start as well as bending a valve by hand is reasonably difficult.
