HELP - car won't start

ok the car won't start and non of the electrical stuff lights up when i put the key in the socket.

i have a Genius G3500 trickle charger which i plugged into the rear 12V socket to charge the battery and it came up with an error reading.

i've now taken the battery out the car and am charging it with the Genius charger which, now it's disconnected from the car is showing the battery at 50% capacity.

i've checked the fuses in both front and rear fuse boxes and they're fine so what am i missing?

What actual voltage is on the battery terminals when the "Genius" is disconnected - you can use a multimeter to measure voltage across terminals.

A trickle charger is not much use if the battery is flat ... it's only useful to prevent the battery from going flat in the first place.

If you have access to another car and jump leads, I suggest you jump start it - but please be very careful with polarity - both when refitting the battery and when attaching the jump leads. You can damage the ECU if you fit the battery backwards, or connect the jump leads backwards.

If it won't go when the jump leads are attached, leave them on for 10-20mins with the other car running - this will charge your battery enough to allow you to jump start - then your alternator will need maybe an hour running with the lights/wipers/radio off to fully charge the battery.

Cheers,
Robin

Im sure you'll be aware of this, but it has caught me out a couple of times - when you deactivate the alarm if you don't start it within 30 seconds or so it immobilises and you need to press the off button again before the car will start.
It appears as though everything is dead but effectively the car is immobilised but with the alarm off .
The battery on Evoras seems to die quite suddenly when it does go too. Mine worked one day as normal and died the next with very little warning.

surely there would be a fuse to stop this happening? seems like a bit of a stupid thing to do but i remember my mate jump starting his car and blowing the main fuse cos the eejit connected the leads back to front but the fuse and the battery were the only casualties

Yes, after a short period of time after pressing the alarm off button the ignition isolates if the car hasn't been started and you need to press the alarm 'off' button again. Has given me that sinking feeling on a number of occasions until I've realised what has happened.

Battery fried?
If your not in AA/Rac or the like, my next step would be to get a new battery.

really? but the voltage across the battery terminals is 13V which i'd have thought would have meant the battery is fine?

voltage at both the socket in the boot and in the car are both zero with the battery connected

Is the -ve terminal on the battery tight? Do you get continuity between the -ve on the battery and the -ve point in the rear subframe?

They've learned from the S2 then - as Robin states, there was no inline fuse in that that would blow in an instance of mis-wiring a jump start - ECUs have been fried. Glad they've learned that lesson and added one for the Evora.
