Has anyone here upgraded the speakers?

If so what make did you go for.

Were the results worth it

A mate of mine (robster on here) has Focals all round in his S2 Type 23.

Nice.

Where as I have foc-all!!

I put in a set of rockies - had to make surrounds for them because of the depth. They were OK but nothing spectacular.

Changed them due to necessity (fitted a harness bar) to a smaller set of sony X-plode.

The sound is much better but I think it's down to the harness bar which allows less distortion of the back panel to which the speakers are fitted.

Perhaps Shug can either agree or disagree with my theory.

Just noticed your question mac...

I've been flippant, 'cos I'm no expert on car stereo. For those who don't know, I do live and broadcast sound engineering as part of my job.

Fact is, a car is about as horrible an environment as you can find for good accoustics. There's more air moving inside the bass bins I use at work than exists inside a closed Elise!!!

Mac, not sure how the S2 rear panel differs, but if the harness bar presses it firm against the bulkhead, you'll have dropped the resonances, in all likeleyhood - whatever the speaker is mounted to needs to be 100% solid, or any control disappears out the window.

On the S1, packing the rear of the pods (with an old t shirt or the like) gave good results - stopped the backwash off the drivers disappearing into the chassis. Dynamat, or the like, in the right locations could also give you better control of the sound.

As for speakers themselves - couldn't advise. I pay zero attention to developments in car audio (for the above reasons) so any advice wouldn't be worth much. I've never heard a setup in an Elise (not that I've asked that many) that I'd p!ss on if it was on fire... But it takes a very special (ie, not overpowered sillyness) ICE system in any car for me to give any credit.

Good advice in any audio realm though is listen to what you'll be getting, before deciding. Pot luck otherwise...

I went for headphones and an IPod (or radio in my phone handsfree).

Only use the stereo in town 'cos I can't hear it above 50 mph...
Also noise levels in the car are so high that I'd recommend some ear protection...headphones do both.

Anytime I want music in the Liz, it's my new SE W800i loaded with choons and the decidedly average ear-pods. They do block out a lot of din from the top-end though, which is nice
