Pagid RS 42 v Carbone Lorraine Rc5+

Post by chrisdb » Fri Jul 03, 2015 5:49 pm

Hi,

My S1 is currently running Mintex 1144 and, although they stop well enough with a good shove they feel a bit wooden to me and lack bite even when warm. I have do e a lot of Internet research and the best options seem to be the Rs42s and the Rc5+ as an upgrade from Mintex. There is a lot of negative press on the CLs on Seloc but not sure how much is just them all jumping on the bandwagon.

Can anyone compare them both? Are the CLs going to kill me? Car will be road use 95% of time so fade resistance is not my primary concern - I want better bite and feel than the Mintex....

Discs are drilled at front and standard on back.

Cheers
Chris

I've used the cl5+ and took them off after one trackday. Replaced them with pagid rs14's which are very good, really like them. Not tried the rs42's so can't comment. CL6's are meant to be really good too but I hated the cl5+'s. Very wooden pedal feel with heat so no use to me.

The rs14's are excellent, even from cold.

I like the CL6s - got them on my Exige. They bed in easily and are not too squeaky on the road. Good on track. Had problems with pad transfer with the Pagid RS14s. I've also just upgraded to Mintex1144 on my Caterham and quite like them compared to the standard pads. Hard to compare on such different cars, but feel similar to the CL6s.

No bandwagon jumping from me Chris but I have personally seen 9 total failures of Carbonne Lorraine pads. The most recent was just last week on almost brand new pads.

I won't touch them personally. I run a combination of RS4-2s and RS14s and never had any problems, nor have I ever seen any failures of Pagid pads.

I had a set of CLs fail. Pads detached from backing material on track.

CL 6's were disastrous for me, ruined the discs and lasted no time. Tried 5's which seemed OK, but do not see any reason to look past Pagids.

Thanks all - I'll go with RS4-2s and see how I get on with them.

I have a drilled discs on the front and plain on the back - is it worth getting a new set of grooved/drilled discs for the front (was looking at EBC Turbo groove) and moving the drilled to the back? Or are the pads more important than the discs?

Cheers

I'd stick with the discs you have. I have drilled on the front (£40 each apec discs, nothing fancy) and plain on the rear too and it's perfect. Rears don't do much anyway.

For a balanced view.. ;-)

I love CL5+. Not the best if you keep your car outside as they corrode but the performance is excellent. I've had issues with changing pads on the same disks, always sorted by replacing the disks. The exige came with 42s and I found them wooden by comparison. Each to their own.

Here's a little graph of friction vs temperature I made up a few months ago. There's a little bit of filling in in places but gives a good idea of which pads work at higher temps.

Cl5+, rs42 and ds2500 are pretty similar so for road I'd use the cheaper ferodos. For track it would have to be cl6, rs14 or ds3000. The only real way to know for sure is to try them all. I tried the rs14 and stuck with them as they are spot on for me.

That's pretty definitive. I suppose it does come down to how they feel to an individual. I just didn't like the 42s, maybe 14s are worth a shot. Next brake change anyway. :-)

Does anyone know what pads come with the V6cup cars?
