Annual service time

Post by istoo » Mon Jul 20, 2015 7:31 pm

Difficult one, and I know his might get pulled. No intention of pissing of mods or the dealership.

I have a s2 111s which was services at Murray all its life, I want he stamps in the book. But I am concerned that I might not get the technical support on hearing the status of the main mechanic. But I don't know any the wiser. I know plenty of very good garages nearby who can I trust to look after my car, JD or central garage both perfectly able. But no dealer stamps.

Is it worth it?

I go to edinburger this weekend and have a rare opportunity to take lotus for annual service.

Torn!

Do i plan to sell it, no idea, and i can't think that far ahead to be honest. But i want to keep it as well as i can.

JD in Insch was John and Dave, John is still at JD, Dave left and took over Central Garage in Glenkindie. I know them both, plus i have a very close pal who owns garage as well.

Depends on the age of the car IME. For a K series car, I don't think most folk looking at them would view a good independent specialist stamp in any poorer a light than the main dealer. I'd think that was purely for the newer car or uber collector car.

That's just my 2c though.

Istoo,

in my experience (not lotus based though)

when buying and selling, I value a known indy garage far higher than a stamp in the book with your car badge,

I've always found people that intentionally go to their local garage / someone they actually trust over just ticking the box by getting the stamp tend to take more care over their cars anyway.

I know Jim King does a few lotus' up our way too and ive used him for loads of car including the lotus in the past too, just to throw someone else into the mix.

I have used JD in Insch with no worries on my 59 plate Exige.

I will use them again in the future.

Not too concerned re main dealer stamp for the Lotus as most buyers will know that for such a niche car, knowledge and ability is better that dealer stamp. That said I might get the big service due later this year done by MM as I have to put it in there to get the recall on the oil coolers done. Talk about sitting on the fence....

I appreciate that Murray's might be a different case as reports on here are generally very good (I've personally never used then except for parts) but for most manufacturers, I wouldn't dream of maintaining a full dealer service, but then, living in Dundee, most main dealers are Arnold Shark, so the dealer badge stamp simply devalues the paper used for the book..

Personally, I'm glad I have a garage / mechanic I trust, and agree with his principles. I know that he fits good quality parts and uses good quality oils etc.
I also don't see a Lotus as anything necessarily that worthy of a specialist, and my S1 is ancient anyway ;)

The oily bits are just an old Rover, and it's so easy to work on that I've had half the car apart over the years myself with no formal mechanical training. Of course, the question really is, what about when you come to sell it.

I would select on expertise and reputation rather than official stamp.

But with a 16 yr old car and no intention of selling, my circumstances may be a little different.

That said, I'd do the same with a 5 yr old car which will almost certainly be sold on next year.

Each to their own, really :-/
