Normal operating temps

I've had my s1 for 3 weeks or so now and have been keeping a very close eye on water temp while I'm driving (as well as checking coolant and oil levels twice a week). In normal use (80 miles per day of a and b-road commuting) it hovers around 82-85 degrees but this morning she got up to 93 while sitting in traffic.

What are the normal operating temps? Is 93 reason for worry? I went out again at lunchtime and it never got over 83.

That's fine.

The water pump tends not to flow as well at idle (designed for a shorter run to the rad than is present in the Elise) but it soon comes down with revs. Can easily get north of 100 degrees in traffic on a hot day if everything isn't tip top and the rad cores are a bit tired. 93 isn't remotely an issue.

If it concerns, there are ways to stabilise, but you don't have an issue with those numbers IMO. If it was an analogue gauge, you'd never notice a fluctuation like that.

PS - it's counter-intuitive, but if you're concerned about the temp in stationary traffic, just sit it in neutral and raise revs to about 2000rpm to spin the water pump harder and you can watch the number come down in seconds - it's normal :thumbsup

A line from another forum regarding Ks that stuck with me:

Traffic Cops pull over an Elise.

"do you know what speed you were doing sir"

"84 degrees officer"

That's a good one, painfully, frustratingly funny (and accurate!)

In the summer your ear will become acutely attuned to the sound of the fan kicking in followed by your own breathing restarting :D

Good thing to check your fan comes on. Should be around 96 degrees. :-)

I'm sure it's higher on mine, maybe 103 & goes off again around 93? It does vary based on whether the lights and heater are on or off though (poor earth affecting the stack).
