S1 bonnet

Post by jimbo » Mon Dec 14, 2015 8:05 pm

Is there a way to adjust this at all, as mine literally always rubs against the leading edge of the clam when opening, so the paint has now been scuffed off

It is adjusted via the washers/shims under the front hinge which will raise/lower the leading edge.

From memory there is more than one and they are of different thickness, so try taking out or adding on a thin one.

What Tut said. Just one word of advice - if you are doing this, make sure the catch aligns nicely as if it doesn't it will get stuck shut and require some brute force to open. :thumbsup

You may also get away with just loosening the three bolts on the hinge and slightly re positioning the bonnet.

Also note the rubber stoppers that it sits on at the front as those can be adjusted up and down for the hatch to close against. :)

It's adjusted by wearing away excess material and then repainting. Repeat until you decide it doesn't matter :-)

I also replaced the rivets on mine, with nuts n bolts, IIRC.

Check the hinge moves freely, mine used to rub. When the hinge gets sticky the bracket flexes and the bonnet folds towards the clam.
Spray it with WD40 and exercise it.
Then adjust with packers if needed.
