Exige S2: Coolant Leak - Suspect Radiator

Post by Rich » Thu Jan 21, 2016 8:06 am

HI,

I am now to the Lotus and the Forum - so howdy :) . I have an S2 Exige S, which I've had for about 4 months and have been using non-stop - however on Monday it decided to dump all of its coolant out. Havant had the chance to look probably but it definitely from somewhere near the radiator (or even the radiator). I was wondering if anyone knew any garages local to Aberdeen (rather than travelling down to Edinburgh) that have a proven track record (excuse the play on words) with exiges?

Thank in anticipation to your responses.

Cheers,

RIch

Hello and welcome to the forum. Rads are made of cheese.... Well I think it's the end caps that go actually. Plenty of NE owners who can point you in the right direction, alas I'm in glasgow and always have to pay a man to fix anything :D

Welcome aboard!

It could also be the hoses to/from the radiator at the front end of the car - I have heard of these coming off when the jubilee clips have been done up a bit jaunty. Depending on how handy you are with the spanners you might be able to at least gain a look at this area through a combination of the front services panels and the front wheel arch liners. But if the radiator has failed you will need to take the clam off and if you have a/c you'll need to split the rad away from the A/C condenser, etc., etc. so you want somebody that's done it before, otherwise they'll make a pig's ear of the job. The front clam (like everything lotus) is fitted with shim stacks at the factory - it's common for these to be piled up and then refitted at random (if at all) which leaves you with a wonky clam and possibly problems in the future when trying to remove the clam to replace the windscreen (that's the next thing which will fail ;-)).

If you've got breakdown assistance I suggest you breakdown and have them tow the car to CMC - unless somebody in Aberdeen knows of a local place that will do this work sympathetically?

If the clam does come off I suggest you switch to the alloy end cap radiators (whether or not your radiator has failed). These are available from elise parts/elise shop/others and these don't fail; the standard ones fail with monotonous regularity and it seems as though Lotus haven't learned the lesson (or at least hadn't last time I owned an S2 Exige, anyway).

Cheers,
Robin

Welcome to SE!

As Lazydonkey mentioned, there are a one or two Aberdeenshire garages, so I am sure someone will advise soon.

Agree with Robin, aluminium rad is the way forward. I would be surprised if it is a failed rad as I would not expect it to drop all coolant straight away, but more likely to loose it gradually. I would suspect an issue with the hose. I could be wrong though... It did happen once before.

Thanks for the welcome and the info guys. I may have a quick investigation this weekend - but having had a look across the forums seems alot of people recommend CMD for Aberdeen Lotus works so I think I will give them a call - see what the craic is.

I gave up on trying to get anything fixed up here long ago. Nowadays the car goes down to CMC in Edinburgh if it needs anything done - it's hassle getting it there and back but at least you know it'll be done right and wont break the bank.

Dave Sedgwick at Central Garage, Glenkindie used to do the work on my Elise before I got it.
