S1 Speed probe

Had a problem with the speedo reading which dropped to zero last weekend.

Got round to having a look today and found the probe connections very wet, dried them out and made ready to reassemble. I removed the probe from the mounting bracket and noticed the probe had been rubbing and making a groove on the face of the probe, it wasn't contacting the serrated ring but with what appears to be a plastic/rubber ring just inboard of the serrated ring as per the photographs below.

Can anyone advise what the clearance should be between the probe and the ring, and fit should be clear of the plastic ring.

It reassembled and working but don't want to wear a hole in the probe face.

Should be 0.5mm to 1.0mm clearance.

You will find that if too far away it just won't read at lower speeds.

That said, the sensor will work fine with that notch worn in it - it's the coil inside the sensor that picking up the movement of the notches on the ring.

Often the wiring is at fault rather than the sensor. Water on the face of the sensor should make little or no difference to the performance of the sensor.

The water was in the connector plug, I've tape it up and will re seal it with some heat shrink tubing.

Ah, then it will definitely fail in due course ... the copper will corrode and fracture once the water reaches the crimp end. That's what the little rubber pieces are for. Before you tape it back up it might be worth smearing in something water repellant, e.g. a silicone spray or similar.
