S2 Exige - side lights not working - HELP !

My side lights aren't working, but my dipped headlights do & full beam.
IIRC, you need to press the side light button first, then the dipped lights button - and then in reverse order to turn them off.
when i press the side light button, you can hear the click noise it makes - but no green light comes on.
the dipped lights work now without pressing the side light button.
the cause of the problem was the number plate bulb holder was faulty - due to an after market led bulb - the whole case has melted!
the fuse kept blowing as soon as i replaced it.
ive cut the cables to the bulb holder - as im going to fit 2 new bulb holders.
I also noticed that the cables were frayed & cut where the grommet is - so it was shorting out. - so im going to solder new cables from here down.
the fuse blowing situation is OK now - ive checked all the fuses & they are all ok. (ones in the front, the 4 under the passenger foot-well & the 2 x 4 fuse box next to the ECU)
I'm thinking - is there a relay gone? - what makes the clicking noise when you turn the lights on?
any help much appreciated
Cheers
