Dead K Series

My Elise took another unexpected trip to see her best pal Craig, I swear there is something going on between that pair!

This time the issue had manifest itself as a misfire, it cleared up after a wee rest, then it was not too bad at low gear high revs EML was on whole time. anyway I cracked on for a good bit then it became a full time misfire with a flashing EMLif I touched the throttle, so I gingerly hobbled back to Inverness where she was recovered from.

Craig called today and asked if I'd hit the limiter or buzzed the engine, I did once hit the limiter out of a wet junction but that was way before any issues. He said one plug was closed and it ran again once opened. He also said one cylinder was down on compression so bore wash was the probable cause, he tried to create a seal again with oil but to no avail so its now.... New Engine Time.

Ideally I'd love a 160VVC in there or something a little fruitier than what came out!

Anyone got anything lying around?

:cheers

You are not having much luck with your pride and joy Mark.
in my experience, stick with it, it will be all worth it in the end .

Those sort of plug closing limiter events are normally done on down change, not revving or accelerating,

I actually had a similar symptom with my s2, turned out to be a dodgy coil, only happened when it got wet!

There must be a load of old crap MG's around with decent 160 engines?

also mega surprised that there isn't valve damage or at least some marking on the piston head if the plug gap is closed - I'm not really up on the k, but i thought the plug sat pretty far in the head/valve concave.

Its amazing to think that this Y reg MGF 1.8VVC is £650

(Same woman driver for last 10 years ....... means the clutch is fecked!)

but if it was a lotus, it would be worth £10,000 more .......... mental

I paid £600 for a 2005 TF 160 vvc on the same miles in 2012.

Holy crap that's a lot of car for the money! Are these things any good?

Sorry if a bit off topic.

Good car for a young lassie though especially at that price.

Clare had one and really liked it.

With you on that, can't see how hitting the limiter will ever get the piston close to the plug, not even sure it's possible with a massive over-rev (until the piston/rod let go).

If the plug has closed, something has hit it, and 99.9% of the time it's something that's floated around inside the cylinder, like a bit of valve/valve seat, trash that's got past the filter, etc etc.

it will all become pretty clear when the heads pulled.

Id suspect a bit of ring or valve floating around in there too tbh.

As you say, once the head is off it should be pretty obvious, but the only time I've damaged a plug before was when the valves that snapped off and went through the top of the piston mashed it! lol

Craig said there is a bit of piston missing from a camera inspection  My guess is that's what closed the plug? Gutted as it was running so well up until then!

missed that, yes, very possible...

if that is the case, you have to look at different root cause, piston breakup has limited causes.

my 111s behaved near the same. coils fixed it for a bit but then it came back.. replaced the Throttle Position Sensor and its been brand new ever since.

edit... touchwood

Coil pack and TPS fixed a cracked piston? Good skills :damnfunny
