Brake Fluid

Post by Stevoraith » Thu Apr 19, 2018 9:07 pm

The Exige (S2 Toyota engine) needs a brake fluid change.

I’m not doing it myself but was planning on supplying the fluid to the garage.

I had planned on using Motul RBF600, can anyone tell me how much I need? It comes in 500ml bottles.

Cheers.

Worth getting the 660? I always bought two and if they didn’t use the second it just meant I had some in stock for next time. 😀

Cheers Ferg- two litres or bottles?

I have read that you only need 1l but also that 2l are needed.... so do I buy two, three or four 0.5l bottles!?

Might just buy the four and as you say I may have some spare for the next time.

Is the 660 recommended over the 600? Doesn't appear to be much difference in the specs for the increase in price?

Car will be mostly used for light road use with the odd trackday.

I’ve mostly stuck with 600 and it works very well. 2 x 500ml bottles should be plenty but no harm in having extra as you really need to change the high spec fluid annually at least. It’s more hydroscopic so absorbs moisture faster and then it looses its high temperature advantage.

Are you/do you track the car? If not fancy fluid isn’t nessercery in my opinion. So long as what’s in is fresh!

In saying that, the RBF600 isn’t to expensive.

(that's why I think Mike will do fine, that and his lack of imagination).

It’s Kennys car Mike.

I just pootle around on the road in it but he tries to cram in as many track days as he can when he’s in Scotland so best to go with the better stuff.
As you say, it’s not too expensive.

2x 1ltr bottles will do fine and for the loads you talk about RBF600 is perfect.

Does anyone remember the fluid that came in two or three different fully compatible colours? I remember using some obscure stuff when I was playing at sprint racing. Was a handy way of knowing when you had fully flushed out each individual brake line...
Well it moves... might as well make the most of it....

Remember to date mark the bottles when you break the seal. Pretty sure the recommendation is to keep an open bottle on the shelf for a year before disposing of due to it absorbing moisture. I guess if you could create an air tight seal it would be ok though?

Good idea.

For future reference, less than a litre was used.
