Takata Airbag recall

Post by Ferg » Tue Jan 22, 2019 4:03 pm

Recently had a safety recall on the Legacy. Looking further at the recall it’s huge and affects loads of manufacturers.

Good article here that lists the affected manufacturers and models.

The scale of the recall is mind blowing. The explosive that inflates the bags deteriorates and can go off in hot conditions apparently.

Subaru were very good about this. I got lots of communication from them outlining the issue, then saying they'd be back in touch when it was my turn for a repair, then an invitation to book in for repair locally, which I did. The dealer gave me a BRZ to play with while they did the repair. That was about a year ago now.

In contrast, the Golf is also affected, but I haven't heard a peep from VW about it. I bought the Golf new and I'm still on the dealer's mailing list for sales news, so it's not like they can't get hold of me. Poor show, VW.

Honda were good too, wrote us a letter and sorted at the last service.

Apparently My X5 is affected, not a peep from BMW.

I’ve had a few Subaru’s and the dealer was probably the best experience I’ve had from a car dealer. S and S Services Ayr.

My dear old Mum worked for them for years in the office - back when they were in Mossblown. A challenging pair of chaps to work for (the father must have retired by now), but their customer service standards were off the chart then and seem to continue to be. Porsche approved repair agents at the time also, which I think they kept up.

Ive not been in for a while maybe a few years as no longer live in the hallowed homeland, plus I'm not allowed an STi, but last time I was Brian was wandering round. I used them for basically everything on most of my cars bar main dealer servicing on the newer non Subaru stuff. I loved how trusting they were, I'd pop in for a chat and get tossed the keys to a new STi or a BRZ and they'd just say, bring it back tomorrow, you bend it you buy it with a wry smile. This technique got me out of a standard WRX and into my fondly remembered STi after 9 months in the WRX Nothing was ever a chore and always a pleasant experience, they never seemed to bother invoicing you for trivial stuff either.

I used AF Noble in Penicuik. No courtesy car but not bothered. They were friendly to deal with. No stock of BRZs to test though. New Outback is pretty nice but bodywork looking a bit dated now. The Impreza is nice enough but small.
