S1 Tailpipes

Can the tailpipes be removed without dropping the silencer first ?. Looks impossible but just checking before i potentially waste time. Box is fine but both tailpipes have rotted through.

Depends what back box you have. Probably easier to drop the cat and back box off as a unit it's pretty simple.

And put something more robust on instead. Larini and 2bular have nice options in stainless IIRC.

It's the original system and I'd prefer to keep it, box is fine just the tailpipes have rotted, i have a spare pair to fit. Out of interest can the original tail pipes be used with any of these aftermarket rear boxes ?.

It’s cheese. Robin. Bin it.

The SS versions are just 10 times better and most have twin tailpipe variants that resemble (or improve on) the std ones.

They don’t equate to noisier either especially on cruise. Unless Janspeed

Thanks Campbell, I'll have a look at those mentioned. I don't want a loud system particularly, quality and fit are more important so recommendations are welcome.

I had a brilliant tailbox. Lasted 18 yrs. Blueflame. Perfect note under load, quiet when cruising.

But they stopped making them.

Got it repaired twice then it finally gave up.

Did stacks of research and narrowed down to Brook Kensington or 2bular.

Was saving up for 2bular when I had the accident which wrote the car off. Game over.

Would still pick 2bular Quiet System again. Talk to CMC or direct to Jim Valentine, who designs and makes them.

I have a full S/S system, 4-2-1 manifold, sports cat and quicksilver back box and pipes. You are welcome to pop over the Campsies and have a listen to my set up. I don't think it is noisy at all - until I remove the cat for the by-pass pipe (which I don't bother with any more). Will be around from 1st Feb.

Thanks all. I've looked at the various systems. Had my box been holed i would have gone for a ss system but given the cost I'm going to just replace the tailpipes for now as i have these spare anyway. I can look at upgrades later on. It's only going to be sat in the garage anyway.

I just prefer driving the old cars these days. I will make an effort to use the Elise this year though, hence the effort to sort it properly before springtime.

On removing the original system I decided to order the Larini sport exhaust, hopefully it's not an ear bleeder. I did send a query to 2bular but didn't receive a reply whereas Elise Shop were very responsive. I know you can't compare a shop with a one man manufacturing business so I've no complaints, just didn't want to wait months for it to arrive.
