I carried a road bike recently using my luggage rack and some ratchet straps. On the return journey I wrapped the strap around the top tube to stop any potential lateral movement. I wasn't gunning it but it did feel secure and no movement... Noticeable wind noise though!ImageImage

It's actually surprisingly stable with the saddle on the roof, but I admit I haven't tested it in earnest! Road bike is significantly lighter than an MTB too.

I got the rack from Elise Parts a few years back.
