Elise Winter Tyres

Post by Mel » Mon Nov 13, 2006 2:28 pm

Hey,

Can any1 recommend any good winter tyres for a S1 Elise? Already had a few scary moments and thats without the snow and the ice! Any suggestions will be much appreciated as am pretty new to this game!
Cheers :wavey

The proper ones are in the owners manual but you'll need another set of front rims for the back (!)

PErsonally just take it easy out there it's a no win in a small lightweight RWDer!

I have never had a problem with Toyo Proxies, but then again I'm not exactly an on the limit driver (Occasionally suffer from skill fade but that is a different problem!) The main benefit is that new they have over 8mm of tread so clear water really well and don't aquaplane easily oh and they are the cheapest anyone regually uses! Downside you can apparently melt them on track and they feel horrible fro the first 300 miles!

All IMHO of course!

So the general consensus is to get Michy tyres at Costco - same size as normal but winter equivelents ? I am thinking about this - dont fancy buying a pair of new rear wheels or I may as well buy a banger and leave the Elise at home.

Don't think you get BFGs in S2 sizes so stick with Yoko AD07s, Toyo T1-Rs or the old std Bridgestones.

Instruction manual says no rear wheel change for S2 needed, so have requested a quote for the Pirelli Snowsport 210 tyres from Blackcircles (it gets snowy here in Livy in the winter - I remember it well in the 3 series last year  ). I will post the costs if anyone is interested. 8)

Last winter, I bought a Peugeot 309 1.4 for £130 taxed and tested. insurance was £80 for 6 months. sold it for £300....

you can hardly buy 4 winter tyres for that!

it was great fun, 155 tyres, lift off oversteer! and if someone runs into you in the snow it doesn't matter!

Thats cheap motoring :D Like the idea of not caring about what you hit, I can imagine my parking getting rather lazy if I were driving such a car.

Just for the record I got a quote for the puckka winter tyres, The Pirelli Snowsports for the S2 £488 fully fitted. Obviously these should be fine for a few winters so its worth considering. Mmmmmmmmmm :?

ed drove his exige (on AO48s - ie semi slick) in about 2 inches of snow down a hill. Then coming back from Crianlarich to Callander there were 6 foot drifts either side of the road. no worries at all :D :D

Point is, if you take it steady etc, you'll be fine.

plus you could spend the cash on decent brakes....

all IMHO of course :D

No way I am with you on that one - having had to abandon my car in a ghetto at 2am cos it wouldnt get up the smallest of small slopes covered in snow.

Top tip - if its snowing, walk / get a taxi / stay in

I have done the same on snowy untreated roads on Maxsports, it was fine - as long as you're carefull.

I doubt that will make things any better if the tyres have reduced grip.

oops, not speaking clearly. didn't mean to imply that you need better brakes in the winter. just that for the best part of £500 you could get a nice set of ali bells and some pagids (for example) for the fast approaching trackday season
