Brake Fluid

Post by Andy H » Fri Nov 17, 2006 8:06 pm

Got myself some Goodridge hoses, and have previously used Halfords High performance DOT 5.1, on bikes + cars with good results.

Anyone wish to comment on Halfords fluid for a S1 Elise?

Front clam off shortly to change driving lamp + do hoses.

Don't need clam off for them on an S1 IIRC.

I would use the best stuff you can justify, ie not the halfrauds crap if you can avoid it. I have used Castrol Dot 4 Super but I'm no expert driver.

Don't forget to bleed the clutch line too!

You don't need the clam off to change the hoses, though the driving lights may or may not be possible with clam on depending on dexterity and ingenuity.

Castrol Super DOT 4 is fine and has a higher dry boiling point than standard DOT 5.1 IIRC. Just check it says it's miscible (sp?) with DOT 4.

Just a word of warning regarding thehoses. I expected an hour at the longest but took me three in the end, their a nightmare. Ended up using a set of "cut open ended spanners with a ratchet drive"(dont know what theyre called!) to do the job. Heard that mpst people just cut the front structure as a shortcut to get the hoses through but I only found that out after. Cheers Craig.

I recommend the Racing Blue brake fluid from Euro Car Parks. Currently in the S2, Mandy's old S1, DDtB's, Zippy's old car and Ironsides. (It was Simon I who suggested it to me)

Works great on road and track and only about £11 per litre.
