Starting problems

Post by vet111s » Wed Dec 13, 2006 2:38 pm

Bit of a lengthy history;
Was away for 4 days last week. On returning car was fairly sluggish starting and when did would not idle and kept cutting out. Ran for a short while, stopped the engine and then when restarted seemed fine.
Again didn't run her for 3 days at the beginning of this week. Tried to start her this morning-the fuel pump ran and the dash did it's normal thing however the starter wouldn't turn over. Sound just like a partially dead battery or something more serious? Havn't tried to jump start yet as cannot find my owners manual to get access to battery and wiring for wiring up for jump start. Is this worth a try 1st?

If the starter isn't turning then batt would be a good start. Quick to check, let s know if it works!

cheers guys. Don't think will try that today-bonnet might get blown away, that or act as a sail and the whole car will blow away! Here does one lay their hands on a battery pack like that? any preferred brands etc?

As an option, though Halfords, Machine mart, Skrew-fix etc will all do them, and possibly B+Q etc too. I got my one in Costco.

I'd recommend getting one with a small air compressor in it too, for inflating your tyres.

Was hoping i'd find a post about this - i popped out last night to drop a dvd back to the shop and when i came back to the car it wouldn't re-start (tried 3 times). But after leaving it for 10 minutes and re-trying, it started fine..... strange!!!

Any ideas? Could it be the battery (like Vet111s)? :?:

Was the engine cranking and not firing or not cranking at all?

Has it been sitting unused for a while?

It would be strange for it to be the battery if it had just started it and you drove for a short distance.

Sounds more like the fuel pump isn't running right. Maybe ECU connected - worth popping over to MMC and getting them to stick the check tool on it.

Does it do it often? If this is the only time, it might just have been a wee electronic glitch (immobiliser or something) and it might never happen again. Feck knows with these overcomplicated 'Yotas ;)

So it cranks and catches but then dies? Does it catch properly or just fire a few times (i.e. do the revs ever exceed 800rpm)?

Did you hear the fuel pump prime when you turned on the ignition the first time?

If you did hear the fuel pump but the engine didn't really catch properly, my guess is that the cam position sensor is faulty.

If you didn't hear the fuel pump it's a wiring fault in the fuel pump circuit or the immobiliser is gubbed. Plenty of S1 immobilisers have failed already, so it wouldn't be a surprise if the early S2 variants didn't start to fail in the same way.

Cheers,
Robin
