Rattling Undertray

There's a really annoying rattle coming from the passeger side floor - especially at motorway speeds.

If you knock the bottom of the undertray from below like you've knock on a door, at a certain point it rattles like crazy. I had a look to see if any bolts are loose - they aren't.

It seems the bottom is rattling on whatever is just above. Do I need to remove the whole centre undertray to get the the bottom of this? The manual only covers removing the front or back undertray. Is it a simple unbolt job (ignoring the potential bolt head breakages that is  )

I would check for loose change under the seats first.

Could be the same problem I had.
Jam a bit of carpet under the seat and the noise will magically disappear :D

If I press down on the passenger floor when driving (not easy) it dissapears so I will try and rig up something. :D

Yep, definitely same problem as me. Jam something under the seat and the noise goes away :thumbsup

Is the floor the same piece of metal as the main undertray? Or is there an alloy sandwich with space in between?

I'll need to remove the front tray anyway as theres something trapped above it which rattles around.

Undertrays are in 3 bits,

Front which hides the steering rack and the anti roll bar and not alot else.

Middle which hides the engine bay

Rear (AKA Diffuser) which hides the zorst.

Under the middle tray there is also the fuel tank shear panel (Its got big round holes in) this hides the fuel tank...

The floor is part of the chassis and cant be removed. The rattles you describe is likely to be the floor drumming with something like a coin or a small rock under the seat. Also you can get the handbrake cable rattling on the undertrays. Try the carpet trick first before taking things to bits.

As for the front undertray and rattles, there isn't much there to rattle. Have you checked under the front services panel?

It's the floor that rattles, I could feel mine vibrating when it made the noise so I knew what was causing it.

Spent ages wondering how I was going to get the passenger seat out after someone with long hairy arms and a liking for bananas had rounded one of the allen bolts (lets just say I got the seats covered in leather before buying the car from the dealers  )

Anyway, one old screwfix catalogue jammed under the seat subframe and no more rattly floor.

Yeah, maybe didn't make that clear enough but you don't need to take the seat out to sort it. Good to hear it's gone though :D

You'll need to replace the catalogue from time to time as it will get wet and rot ...

You could do what MMC done with my S1.... drill a small hole through the undertray and pump a load of rubber type bond throught till it bonded the seat and tray.

Took me a fecking age to cut through it though when I wanted to remove the seat to get it recovered!
