About to book the Golf Anniversary wheels in for refurbishment, but will need to be off the car for a few days and would like to keep it useable if we can.
Very long shot this but...anyone got a set of VW group wheels, with same or similar effective rolling radius as 18" rims on 225/40 rubber? Ie, could be a set of 17s (or even 16s at a push) with appropriately higher profile tyres on.
And which are available to borrow for a week at some point in the next month or so?

Top offer matey, sadly I think the discs are almost that big in their own right! 312mm to be precise.

We got 2 new sets during the warranty period! When they fitted the last set, just before it ran out, I asked about what happened when they went they same way. Guy was adamant...warranty is 3 years from date of purchase, end of story.ed wrote:Campbell, is your car still under warranty?
I managed to get a brand new set of wheels FOC for my anni from VW due to the corrosion?!
Should have just got 1st set of replacements refinished right away, ie lacquered right through from back, as that is the main cause of the prob.

Haven't rung the refurbishers yet, but could be talking just a few days (and only a couple hopefully), so do you want to ask your mate if he would object? The car won't travel far on them...just don't want Lisa and the wee one to be without transport at any time (Lisa is heading for 7 mths pregnant!).

Tyre width is expressed as absolute size, eg 225 = 225mm (at a certain part of the cross section, presumably widest). So a 225 is a 225 is a 225. Tyre profile is expressed as percentage of this, however.
So a 40 profile tyre which is say 195 section will have a different sidewall height to a 40 profile tyre which is say 225 section. ie 40% of 195 differs from 40% of 225, etc.
If you get this wrong, it affects gearing and speedo readings. OK so as confessed, I don't plan to do many miles (!) however I am obviously keen to ensure all is fully safe etc.
Maybe more important is to check the inner diameter of the 16" rims to ensure they can fit over the (considerably large!) brakes and calipers...our GTi PD 150 Anniversary has hooj brakes, from the factory, maybe one reason they had to fit 18s in the first place
But based on what I know of Golfs, I'd hazard a guess that his new rims are running 225 tyres. 205 is a bit "narrow" (!) and 215 is quite a rare section I think.
How exciting!! Bet you wish you'd kept your mouth shut...
