Wanted - very short term loan - VW group wheels

About to book the Golf Anniversary wheels in for refurbishment, but will need to be off the car for a few days and would like to keep it useable if we can.

Very long shot this but...anyone got a set of VW group wheels, with same or similar effective rolling radius as 18" rims on 225/40 rubber? Ie, could be a set of 17s (or even 16s at a push) with appropriately higher profile tyres on.

And which are available to borrow for a week at some point in the next month or so?

Cheers!

14" seat ibiza wheels but i'm not sure if they'll fit over your brake discs.

LOL, 14". My Nova had 14s and I thought they were hooj...

Top offer matey, sadly I think the discs are almost that big in their own right! 312mm to be precise.

Can just see Robin out with the Angle Grinder..."s'ok boys, I can squeeze 'em on for you if you just give me another couple hours and all the leccy that Longannet can deliver!"

I am enjoying your efforts to entertain me at this horrific hour, appreciated! ;-)

I have got 4 16"s off a brand new mk5 gt tdi in the garage - only problem is I am miles away from you - there if needed though.

Campbell, is your car still under warranty?

I managed to get a brand new set of wheels FOC for my anni from VW due to the corrosion?!

We got 2 new sets during the warranty period! When they fitted the last set, just before it ran out, I asked about what happened when they went they same way. Guy was adamant...warranty is 3 years from date of purchase, end of story.

Should have just got 1st set of replacements refinished right away, ie lacquered right through from back, as that is the main cause of the prob.

C'est la vie!

Glasgow is well within range...what tyre sizes are on them? I need to replicate an 18" rim with 225/40 tyre. What did you fit to the Mk5 in their place?

Im sure they are duty bound to make sure they last if not for the three years then at least one... How long has it been?

They are off a mates golf, which we swapped the wheels on last week. Replaced with 18s with a 40 profile.

We may have a match...just need to know the tyre section now eg 225 etc, to be certain. Although I may also have to consult the GTi forum to confirm if offset is OK as well.

Haven't rung the refurbishers yet, but could be talking just a few days (and only a couple hopefully), so do you want to ask your mate if he would object? The car won't travel far on them...just don't want Lisa and the wee one to be without transport at any time (Lisa is heading for 7 mths pregnant!).

muchas thanks in advance...

Correct me if I am wrong, but as long as the stud pattern / pcd and offset is right, it shouldnt make any difference what size and width they are (be it 16/17/18").

Dont think he would mind, they will probably sit for a few months anyway.

[Stop me if teaching granny to suck eggs here...]

Tyre width is expressed as absolute size, eg 225 = 225mm (at a certain part of the cross section, presumably widest). So a 225 is a 225 is a 225. Tyre profile is expressed as percentage of this, however.

So a 40 profile tyre which is say 195 section will have a different sidewall height to a 40 profile tyre which is say 225 section. ie 40% of 195 differs from 40% of 225, etc.

If you get this wrong, it affects gearing and speedo readings. OK so as confessed, I don't plan to do many miles (!) however I am obviously keen to ensure all is fully safe etc.

Maybe more important is to check the inner diameter of the 16" rims to ensure they can fit over the (considerably large!) brakes and calipers...our GTi PD 150 Anniversary has hooj brakes, from the factory, maybe one reason they had to fit 18s in the first place

But based on what I know of Golfs, I'd hazard a guess that his new rims are running 225 tyres. 205 is a bit "narrow" (!) and 215 is quite a rare section I think.

How exciting!! Bet you wish you'd kept your mouth shut...

Cheers

I am down with all of the above, I just hadnt appreciated that you were wanting to ensure that the speedo wasnt 0.000012% out due to a set of wheels which would only be on the car for a few days ! :D

I think it might be about 4% for an inch difference overall diameter ;-)

I am sad in these kind of ways, as you are discovering sir!

I'll speak to the refurb guys in the next day or so and see what the state of play would be.

Appreciate your tech support above!
