Sticking brakes - help

Post by Caveat Lector » Mon Feb 26, 2007 10:13 pm

I don't tend to use my car during the week, and when I come around to take it out of the garage at the weekend I find that the brakes seem to be stuck. It takes a little bit of power to move off. I now leave it without the handbrake on (just choc the wheels) but that doesn't seem to make much difference. After the initial noise as it comes loose there's no noise when I'm driving it.

So Help! Is this a common problem? Does it do any damage? How do I stop it happening?

Thanks

could be just light rust on the discs if left outside if in a garage as you approach your house have light left foot braking to warm and dry the discs

Yup.... common problem.....

I'm sure one of the more technical bods will be along in a minute but I think the general idea is to get plenty of heat in the pads before tucking the car in for the week....

Something to do with dampness between the pads and discs causes the sticking so the heat helps minimise it....

Either that or use the car more...

Dave.

As MrT says, give the brakes a bit of grief before parking up and the pads and discs will be all toasty warm ready for bed. Won't stop them sticking completely but will help a bit.

Yup, this happens to me too. Simon advised me to do some heavy braking and/or left foot braking and it works a treat. Still get the odd bit of stickiness but if I remember to do this before parking it up for a few days, it's generally ok.

Not of course a problem with '97 S1's if you kept the original MMC's.

Thanks for the help. I'll try left foot breaking before parking up for the week.
