S2 Gear-linkage

Post by Kev » Wed Feb 28, 2007 3:06 pm

My car has been sitting unloved for about 7-8 weeks and since I’ve been out in it (after the AA gave me a jump start), I noticed changing gear is a bit stiff, as like stirring porridge. So just wondering is it the gear-linkage just cruded up? and is it easy to take apart and lube up? Haven't had a chance to look at it properly.

Take off the undertray - that's the worst bit - easier if you have wheel ramps, though.

Then next to the pax side drive shaft you will see a heath-robinson contraption that is the gear linkage. There's a bolt that acts as the pivot for the left-right movement of the gearstick - it's in a big triangular plate - that needs to come out and get a good lube with something like real grease or copper slip. Put back together, job done, usually.

It's also worth checking that the two slide clips that hold the cables in place at the gearbox end are properly home and not either hanging off or gone already.

Cheers,
Robin

Also worth checking it for slop, should be minimal fore-aft wobble and smooth left-right if memory serves.
