Fuel Pump

Post by GregR » Sat Mar 31, 2007 11:00 am

Well, was booked in at chez Robin for my S2 fit this morning, but car showed no signs of life when I tried to turn it over. Robin kindly made the monster trip down to mine to see what the problem was, and the fuel pump seemed to be on the blink.

After a bit of pushing & pulling (by Robin... someone had to steer!) we got the car hooked up to his camper wagon and towed back to his garage.

Turns out the fuse to the fuel pump was blown. When replacing, we got a spare 10A fuse out of the front box and then we were laughing. Prob was, that the 10 that should've been in at the fuel pump was actually a 20A ... so the pump has blown something twice the current it ought to have!

So, it appears that I may have a fuel pump issue - given the fact there was a 20A where a 10A should've been, it sounds like someone in the past may have been fecked off at a constant state of fuse replacement and doubled the rating.

Has anyone else had a similar problem, or heard of a similar problem? It seems fine now, but is bloody typical with a walshy day booked for Friday. In the meantime, I'll stock up on 10A fuses and get used to popping a new one in.... I hear fitting a new pump is expensive :?

On older cars it is possible for the fuel injection pump fuse to blow leaving you stranded. Older cars have a 10A fuse which is now a 20A fuse on later cars. It has also moved location. As with any car it is advisable to carry some spare fuses.

interesting...

Robin had the circuit diagrams and that showed a 10A; maybeez I'll check the user manual.

In any event, bought 3 packs of 10A fuses, but during an arduous 3 hour drive, all was well :D

Most cars I have seen have 20A fuses in.

Yep, 20amp fuse.

I went through a stage where mine were blowing, we cleaned the holder up, and it was OK since.

In actual fact, it saved me from the infamous Crathie Bridge police road block from our Sunday run, as it blew 2 miles short, Craig stopped to help me, and Simon warned us about it.

Interesting - Greg, check the owner's manual - if it says 10A too then I would telephone the factory and ask them whether they changed to a 20A fuse in much later cars.

Also we should check on Campbell's car - it's been his from new and he will not even know where the fuse is, so therefore cannot have changed it.

If it's 20A, it was put there by the factory ... if so, you can switch to 20A next time it pops.

Cheers,
Robin
