Muting cobra alarm on a 96 S1

Post by les » Tue Apr 03, 2007 11:02 am

morning,

well I'm ashamed to say it, due to lack of use and over work, my S1 battery has completely drained, so much so that I am unable to disable the alarm. does anyone know how to mute the alarm so I can charge the battery? I have an original S1 1996 with a cobra alarm although there is no docs/notes on the install etc. I have the cobra key (actual key) and the electronic key for the steering column switch (which does absolutely jack). Also with only a month left of warranty from Paul Mattys, and not a lot of mile done, are there any points I should double check on.

Cheers

Les

On a 96, if original fit alarm, you should be able to disarm the alarm/immobiliser by switching on the ignition (obviously you will need jump leads if the bat is dead) to the run position, then touch the fob into the recepticle on the cowling near the ignition switch.

Once disarmed you can then switch off ignition and whip off the battery -ve lead.

Oh, and you can also disable the alarm completely using the alarm master switch which is fitted in the passenger side footwell, but you need the key for it, which you should have received with the car (often they are left in the lock, so check there if you don't have it anyway).

or you could pull off the positive lead if the battery is that flat and then charge the battery while in car but not attached to car electrics

But you may find if battery has been left flat for a very long time it might be dead and won't accept a charge

NO. Don't pull off the positive lead, pull off the negative lead and charge the battery in situ.

Always remove the -ve lead first, then the +ve. Always connect the +ve lead first, then the -ve.

Paul, the problem with the cobra alarm is that if you disconnect the battery while the alarm is not in a disarmed state, it goes mental thinking that you are trying to steal it.

robin,

yeah thats my issue, the alarm has gone mental and thinks I want to steal it :o( So, use the cobra key to disable the alarm using the key, charge the battery, reconnect when charged, re-enable the battery and disarm as per normal

And don't forget that the touch fob is completely different function (if identical looking) on later S1 alarm systems - in the early type it's used as a back up for when the batteries in the transmitters are flat - in the later type it initiates recoding of the alarm and thus stops your transmitters working!!
