engine mount gubbed!

Post by r055 » Fri Apr 06, 2007 5:46 pm

Started with jingling noise over my right ear when accelerating today.
noise got louder.
then i noticed the gear stick moving more when on and off of the throttle -i know you can normally feel the vibration through the gearstick when on the throttle, but this was noticably moving.
then when on and off the accelerator, it feels like the engine/ gearbox is not really part of the car anymore! too much play.
Every bump in the road feels like the engine is going to drop through the undertray!
Rattling only happens when in a gear - i.e. when revving it in neutral or with the clutch in it sounds fine.
The exhaust also feels like there is deeper growl to it since it started.

Off to check the service manual... engine mounts etc.

anyone got any ideas?

Car been away down at Judes for 2 weeks getting fixed...
Fuel tank out, cleaned, new fuel pump, filter...

This was me driving home from spending 500 bucks on fixing the fcuking thing!!!!!!! :!:

Hi Ross,

Definitely didn't notice anyhting like that on the road test. :?

Give me a call tomorrow if you get a chance and I'll have a chat about it with you. Does sound like an engine mount problem though.

The exhaust flexi was slightly poking through the undertray before i had taken it off.

The right-hand upper mount doesnt look out of place (i think :? ) but the left hand mount looks like the rubber has deterioated...

Can any one help?!? :?:

That right hand side engine mount looks proper fcuk

And it looks like the lower linkage is hitting the chassis I would say replace both as a precaution. I would also be hesitant to take the car out until its fixed.

But it is spanners this weekend and if someone can rustle up an engine mount

As to mentioning this in a public forum well i don't think any of us could of asked for a fairer response then the one that was given

Looks like the gearbox mount is fecked and then the other end may well now be fecked too...

the two either end are rover items the middle one is Lotus. Simon has the sump mount spare from what I remember.

You need the top two in this picture I reckon. Or at least the top right £20+VAT:

The bar that is touching the subframe should be more-or-less horizontal.

The gearbox end mount might well be gubbed, but only the drivers side engine mount could cause this problem I think. I would guess that the two 18mm bolts that hold the engine mount to the chassis mount are not present, or that the mount has sheared.

I would be surprised if it's the rubber itself because failure would still leave you some support.

If you can be arsed to remove the right hand rear wheel arch liner you could take a photo.

Alternately, point your camera into the wheel arch from the exhaust side at about a 45-degree angle - in case you don't know what you're looking for, you are trying to photograph the thing that protudes from the cam-belt end of the engine into the space just above the chassis.

How do you get pics form the service/parts manual? I'm computer incompetent....

/thread drift...

Isn't the big mount filled with fluid? Could this have popped? It could explain the gradual failure.

In acrobat there is a wee camera icon - it lets you select an area of the document and copies it to the clip board. Then run mspaint and paste in the image; edit, trim and save as .PNG, then upload to photobucket or whatever.

I didn't know it was fluid filled, but it could be!

It may be that it has collapsed, but it's hanging so low I would suspect a more serious failure - anyway, either way it's the drivers side engine mount that's broken!

Cheers,
Robin

Ross

I recently bought an engine mount off eBay to modify as a rear torque mount for the Honda engine, but no longer need to.

If you need it let me know, I paid £5 plus £8 postage for it.

the mount has sheared and engine is hanging down a good 2 inches more than it should be  :?

does anyone have a spare right-hand side engine mount they would like to sell me?!? - willing to travel anywhere this weekend to pick up.
i would probably be best replacing all of them, eh?
