Coolant loss

Just back from St Andrews and on removing luggage from boot noticed that coolant level had dramatically dropped in the 2hrs it took to get home. Got stuck at Kincardine bridge for ages and engine temp went up to 102, fan kicked on and all was fine. Expansion tank is not empty jus lost some volume. No steam from radiator and engine seems to be running fine so hopefully not HGF! Just top up and keep an eye or any good suggestions for another cause of this?
Cheers in advance guys

First of all I would let it completely cool down & see what happens to the levels. I know the levels can vary a bit suject to tempeture....IMHO

Replace the expansion tank cap first.

Just changed my radiator the other week . There was leakage evident from the radiator intake only when it had sat overnight. Normal level is now below the cool line.

If it's an S2 111S then it'll possibly be your rad, seems to be the time of year for it to happen. Mine went, then tankfeet's went too. Not too difficult a job to do if you fancy doing it yourself, does mean taking the clam off though.

cheers guys, expansion tank cap is hopefully en route from elise parts as I type. Difficult to check for leaks in rad as stays on street at night though havn't seen any pooling of coolant. I'll let you know how I get on.

You wouldn't see it on the ground, have a look around the radiator and see if there's any sign of coolant around it. Look closely at the plastic ends as this is where they usually fail.

Mine got a new radiator this year.......53 s2 111s?
Leaks get caught by under-tray?
Very common prob apparently due to poor design. Covered by extended warranty tho.

There is no way I can buy anything for the Elise if I know there is a better one available. In fact it is not just the Elise, I want a new camera and keep being drawn towards semi-pro stuff which is complete over kill for what are essentially holiday snaps and pictures of Millie (daughter). Sorry "travel photography" and "portraiture" - see now I can nearly justify the Nikon I want.
Long way of saying yes I bought the upgraded one. the 300+VAT upgraded one because it seemed to suggest it may make the car go quicker and make me more attractive to women.
