Brake rattle

Post by gdr » Thu May 17, 2007 10:02 pm

May have been done before but -
I have fitted Pagid RS4-2 pads to my Exige S2 and now have got a rattle/clicking from the front - goes away as soon as light pressure is applied to brake pedal. Pretty sure it is the pads in the calipers.
Certain the anti rattle springs are in correctly and I've fitted the self adhesive buffers below the pads. Pads are bedded in OK with no significant squeal.
Questions are -
Is a little bit of rattle from front brakes acceptable (can't hear it at speed) or could this lead to problems?-
Is it better to use the sticky pad backing stuff that the OEM pads came with which appear to firmly fix the pad to the piston.
Thanks

Get more of the anti-rattle pads from Lotus and stick them on teh caliper above and below the brake pad. That should stop the noise, did on mine anyway.

I tend to find they rattle really badly when they are fairly new, once they have had a month or so of wear they seem to settle down.

Thanks, just need a bit of reassurance before departing on long trek to Donny later this weekend for Monday trackday. Have ordered some more of the adhesive buffer pads from Eliseparts. I guess the rattle is due to large tolerance in caliper to allow for heat expansion, so not unusual.
Brakes working well in all road conditions, will see how the new pads fare on track soon.

AARGH, not the Lizparts ones! They last ten minutes, from all reports I've heard!

I think this is the only instance where the actual Lotus part works better...

£1.50 or something for a set - these are the little pads that stick on caliper below pad, not the big ones that go on back of pads which I don't think are a good idea. Stuck in a couple of extra ones now, rattle seems to have gone, I'll see how long it lasts.
