S2 K into S1?

Post by timmsky » Sun Jun 17, 2007 10:50 pm

How hard can it be?

I'm thinking it may be better to swap out my tired 60K miler motor for a newer one.

Is it riddled with issues such as electronics etc, 'cos i'm having enough of those ;)

Thanks
Iain

The engines are virtually the same

It's the electronics that are different, so you could keep the S1 ecu etc and add a dizzy

It's easy enough - it's what we did to Andy's RLC, *but* you will keep all the same problem ridden electronics ...

The next step of fitting the S2 looms and electronics is very hard and expensive, as the ECU connector forms part of the car's main harness, not the engine harness.

Cheers

Thanks Guys,

Robin - if it's a mullered engine that will never start, then we may be looking for that elusive needle and eliminating electrical/electronic issues that are not there.

I can get a low mileage 135R engine for a few hundred quid. Would my dizzy fit straight on?

Cheers,
Iain

You need to swap the intake cam between the engines or fit a distributor drive (eliseparts sell them) to existing cam - never done it, don't know if it's practical to do in situ.

It is worth it if you can get it cheap.

Just emailed the guy... what's a realistically cheap price?

Low mileage, no gearbox, 500 quid would probably be a fair price. I know Kelvin sold his higher mileage 135 engine + box for 900 and we bought the RLC's engine+box for a bit less than that. C/R boxes change hands for at least 400 second hand, so the engine alone worth about 500.

If it has all the trimmings (alternator, inlet/exhaust manifolds, etc.) then you can probably make some cash back on selling these on. The alternator won't work on your car (different loom), the injector rail won't work on your car (different injectors, different loom), there is little or no point in having the alloy plenum (shown repeatedly to be of dubious value at anything but peak power), you may as well use the alloy TB though (same dimension, but won't stick). I would switch to S2 exhaust manifold and downpipe though - better yet if the seller has these - if not 99 quid gets you a stainless S2 downpipe from the usual suspects.

If you want a bit more power and are popping the cams out anyway, you can get some slightly longer duration/higher lift cams for another ~200 and these will come with the distributor drive fitted (p/x against your old cams).

Cheers,
Robin

Dizzy drive just taps in, problem would be alignment but it's not critical as it just distributes the spark to the right cylider, the ECU does all the hard work getting the timing right. Word of warning though, get it right! It will not come out!

Its a solid shaft with a rubber damper on one end suttounded by a metal case which is an interferance fit in the cam. the only bit you can get hold of is the shaft and then the rubber resists all attempts at removing the casing.

Thinking about it I have a set of standard cams with dizzy drive you can have for postage if you need them.

Hmmm... hope he comes down a bit then:

Seemed a bit steep to me and was hoping he would come down as the advert's been on over a month...

phew - not often I have to correct Robin, but that's a glaring error

I'll take the C/R box if the engine you buy is lumbered with one.

Fraid not old chum, you'd have to get up early in the morning to catch FBF with his trousers down ;)

And if it was coming with a CR box, it would be on my car :P
