Scottish Elises

I have taken off the shroud covering the gear linkage mechanism becuase the gear stick was sliding up and down, there does not seem to be a retaining clip or anyhting in place to hold the gear stick in place, IS this normal or am i missing something somewhere .. ??

The ball at the lower end of the gear lever is clamped between two plastic cups, a larger lower, smaller upper.

These are held in place by the top mounting plate, which through bolts to the gearbox tunnel.

You will probably have to unbolt and inspect the plastic cups, or see if anything else is amiss.
