wifes car been resprayed before we got it... help pls

Post by Scottynic » Fri Aug 10, 2007 11:40 am

Okay guys my missus bought a Seat Leon Cupra from a seat dealer in Forfar about 18months ago, we have just found out it was re-sprayed before she got it and the laquer is coming off so it looks sh*t.

The dealer is says he never got it sprayed and it could have possible been smashed so wont admit anything.

I do not see why we should have to pay for a re-spray, i need advice as to how to go about finding out who is liable for this and getting the car fixed.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

I think you might be struggling after 18months - GregR is one of the resident legal eagles and likes nothing more than writing a strongly worded letter of complaint :D

Well... is it not covered under their paint warranty?

I would say after 18months - you've probably got little comeback - unless it's still under warranty

Buyer beware?

Hopefully I'm wrong - but our inhouse Lionel Hutz should be able to confirm/help

Paint/anti rust warranties are usually 5 or 6 years, aren't they.

How old is the car?

Who said it has been resprayed? Why was it resprayed? Who resprayed it?
Green Subaru Impreza Turbo, a 'classic'.

Silver Jeep Cherokee 2.5 TD, on SORN spec...

If you bought it from a main dealer with the assumption that it had the full (or remainder of) paint/rust warranty, then I would have thought they should honour that.

If they didn't know it was resprayed, then surely thats irrelevant... you pay more from a main dealer for their services/approved used schemes... so would expect them to be on top of this kind of thing.

That's my uneducated view on the matter... I'm sure you could get some consumer advice onn it though.

You should be able to see in the engine bay if it has been resprayed - or if you pull away the carpets.... Even if its the same colour there will be a paint line/drip where it has stopped... As 99% of the time people dont take the whole car apart to do a respray (costs about 100 times more prob why)

And you could just get the car polished and some fresh laquer sprayed over - cant imagine it would cost too much (garage in Edinburgh done it for £400 for my BMW last year... Looked brand new) 8)

okay, the car is a 53 plate late 2003 so just turned 4 years old, a seat engineer came to look at it today and said because its been resprayed its not covered by anything (seat paint warranty is only 3 years anyway)

I thought used car dealers were supposed to HPI cars so never did as we had bought cars from guy before and seemed trustworthy (well as much as a car sales man can be!)

Don't know who resprayed it yet, dont know why it was resprayed.

Always had my suspicions not long after we bought it there was an overspray mark on the window that we never noticed during our excitement of buying the car plus the wing mirrow cover is broken underneaath agian something which was not noticed.

Will be having serious words with dealer when I get home from Dubai!!!

Respray wouldnt show up on Hpi - just because it has had paint doesnt mean it has been in a smash / written off.

Someone poured brake fluid over one of our cars a few years back and it needed new glass/ every trim / total respray, and was all done on insurance - car was still Hpi clear on all counts.

Scotty who is the last owner on the V5??? Find their number, give them a phone sure they will tell you exactly what happened 8)

Unfortunately dealer probably wont do anything if it has just had some paint work done before they bought it in - and they obviously couldn't tell you if they genuinly didn't know!

As JJ says probably nothing to do with a crash - Hope you get it sorted though mate...!!!
