KH has run the whole gamut of overtaking rules. It used to be either side, then on the right only which I preferred, to the now on the left only.

Overtaking on the right means the car ahead never has to move off line, the overtaking car which would normally be a more experienced driver, and/or a faster car, can modify his speed and overtake on the inside line without anybody being held up, or nervous about moving over back and to all the time, which with constant mirror is the worst scenario for an inexperienced driver.

it was actually into Mcintyres (or Turn 3) and caused no problems and did not result in any black flag or such like from the marshalls..

I was the passenger in the car when it happened. We had just come out of the pits so weren't holding anyone up for 2 laps and the R400 (don't know who was driving) overtook on the rundown to the left hand sweep heading towards macintyres. So basically from the top of the hill at the first bend we swept right to get a better run into the left (as per Mr Donkey's advice) and the R400 came round the outside (right) and cut across as we were entering the the left hand bend.

At the end of the day, track days are filled with testosterone and adrenalin is running through the vains. Things are going to happen and people make decisions on the spot, some are deemed suitable and others aren't. We live and learn.

Mads,
If the person in front is holding you up could I suggest a drive through of the pits or bringing it to the attention of the marshalls?
Rather than breaking the rules that KH have put in place? I believe the rules apply to everyone that signs up....no-one is exempt!

Oh....and welcome along to Rod and yourself!

thanks Meatball - i was taught at school that rules are there to break...
i am still laughing... i will drive in a safe but probably inconsiderate manner - i guess just get out of the way if i am coming through!!

Maybe i should get a large american bus with no brakes, sure you will all get out of the way then!! I will happily take all the grief anyone wants to give when i am the one pulling my car out of the tyre wall (with the assistance of a passenger who i dont know)..

p.s. if anyone wants to learn how to drive - happy to offer lessons!

What happens if they don't see you or get out of your way and there is a collision?

that would be my fault i suppose.. and again i would get the grief i deserve

Think you are focussing your frustration at the wrong person - i didnt cause an accident, and the pass that i made was entirely safe - it is one of the most common passing spots at knockhill when racing. The fact that everyone religiously keeps to the left into macintyres (staying on the dry line on Sunday) means there is a 'free lane' round the right side, and Toyo 888's that actually have some heat in them, do grip in the wet (its just nearly impossible to get heat in them when the whole track is wet).

the guy in the mustang had apparently (unsurprisingly) been suffering from failing brakes throughout the day and crashed at the hairpin due to failed brakes - i suppose it was just luck that there was not an unavoidable car in front of him... 800kg elise v.s. 2000kg mustang?????? (or worse still caterham vs mustang) vent your anger at him as you could as well have been in a mustang/gravel/tyrewall/lotus sandwich.
A 500kg Caterham is ALWAYS going to come of worse, and hence i feel justified in taking some liberties. If i drove the way i do in a 2 tonne car, quite rightly i should be stopped!

i think the thing is everyone should firstly drive within their own abilities, and secondly within the cars abilities. If you had failing brakes, would you approach on of the tightest track corners in the UK at full tilt?
that way there would be even fewer incidents and off's, although making mistakes on track is ok - part of learning - is why most people do track days as you cant do that on the highway.

I don't believe Meatball is talking to the wrong person - the Mustang driver did not commit a deliberate act. Whether or not you caused an accident is irrelevant. What is relevant is you broke a serious safety rule (and more than once - as I recall someone commenting at an SIDC day earlier this year that you did the same manoeuvre then). A rule spelled-out quite clearly at the briefing. A rule everyone else is operating in accordance with. A rule every other track user is expecting those around them to follow at all times. You might be "travelling much quicker than anything else on the track", indeed you might be an amazing driver... but this is also totally irrelevant. This is not racing, and the fact that you seem totally self-justified in passing other cars in prohibited areas on a trackday is disturbing.

We've all been irritated at times by straight line heroes. Indeed, some of us drive much lower-powered Caterhams than your R400, and suffer even more behind 911s etc on the straights - yet most of us manage to leave it at simply being irritated and avoid making ourselves exempt from or above the rules.

Sorry if that doesn't fit your needs. Everyone else has paid the same fee, everyone else has as much right to enjoy their day as you (rookie, novice or ex-racer alike). Passing on a side expressly forbidden just cannot be excused. Frankly, if it's a policy of yours to blatantly ignore the rules then you shouldn't be participating at the trackdays, and would expect you to be asked to leave...

Mads,
I'm not sure if you are joking and I'm simply missing it but your attitude (as it comes accross in this thread) is shocking!
A trackday is only a bit of fun, so what does it really matter if you are held up? Just find another space on the track and have some fun!
I think Jason covered the rest of what I was going to say.
I realise that nothing happened on that occassion and that in the grand scheme of what is going on the world it isn't a big deal but rules are there for a reason (so all levels can enjoy the trackday) and contrary to what you say are not there to be broken!
