And I believe insurance companies are more than wise to it - AA recovery, I'd chance pushing it out the gates and saying you'd smacked it on the access road, but not insurance...

I was only half kidding.

The way I look at it is, the cost of insurance and excess will cover most repair bills ie clam damage. Save the cash and enjoy the day.

Many years ago, I killed a wheel bearing on knockhill on a track prepped XR2i - it extruded out through the centre of the wheel - proper fooked :?

I jacked up that corner of the car and with some help rolled it on the jack into the car park where I called out a well known recovery company. Ever tried describing the location of Knockhill to someone without actually using the word race track? Eventually the operator clicked it was the car park of KH and repeatedly asked if it had been on track. No no, I said, the wheel bearing failed on the way here.

Truck arrived, and the chap jumped out and burst out laughing - looking at the dubs splattered stripped out 2i still with the trackday sticker on it, a jammed wheel and me walking around with my helmet, asks if it had been on track. Thinking I was busted I admitted it had. He just chuckled and told me he got paid either way, then they recovered it to dunfermline (?) where it got repaired.

Only pain was having to drive down the following weekend to collect it. Actually on tht journey home was when I found that the wheel/tyre combo caused the speedo to under read by about 8mph. Cut it awful fine on some speed cameras that day  Only found out because gareth phoned me (!) to warn me the police were sitting behind me and I was doing a steady ninety (rear vision was terrible with the wrap around buckets and I was paying no attention). Sold the bag of sh1te not long after...

Had many a conversation with an AA guy that as long as you don't take the piss, the recovery guys won't mind a jot - just don't let on to the lassie on the phone and don't be a dick and think the recovery guy was born yesterday...

Never had insurance before on track. Just a little worried due to the unpredictable nature of the Clio - will just have to drive like a granny :)

Have you experienced its unpredicability (is that even a word?). Reason I ask, is that I thought the Mk1 V6 was the widow maker and MK2 was a much sweeter package. Not sure, but I think that was what I read...

At the end of the day it's a short wheel base rear wheel drive car so I presume it has more of a disposition to turning round when least expected than some? Just take it easy and you should be fine, I would think.

I believe I'm right in saying that you get booted off the track day at KH these days if you have a second spin, so pushing to/past the limits isn't that wise anyway anymore...

It is a lot better than the MK1 it'll telegraph with under steer initially before it snaps and lets go completely. As this will be my first time out with a ME, RWD (only ever tracked Front Engine RWD cars) I just wanted a security blanket while I was learning.

I'll just take it easy and nudge her in slow and ease on the gas out. I expect the right indicator bulb might need replaced after the track day ;)
