I'm not staying in one of those inner-city rooms again with the floor-ceiling windows. the red lights really interfere with my beauty sleep.

FRENCH FROLIC 10 - 21/8 to 28/8

Post by DDtB » Mon Jun 06, 2011 12:47 pm

Looks like I'm heading home at the end of frolic now as opposed to staying for an extra week in France.

Any single travellers looking to pair up with a roomie on the Geordie express before I go booking another room.?!?

Cheers!!

Dave.

Hey Dave,

Cant help there as I'm going over the channel...but I havn't booked the ferry yet as I can't decide whether or not to go to the Ring after the frolic..I'm thinking even though it's a tourist day in Aug it might be quiet cos Spa GP is on. I really want to do a few more laps but.....

What do you guys think?

Frank

I would avoid unless it's a track day - the potential for a frustrating day of crashes is so high that I'm just not interested in going unless I happen to be passing on an odd day or it's a track day (not had the chance to do one yet though!).

Cheers,
Robin

Anyone tempted to do the track day at Ecuyers with LOT on the Saturday? Realise this would mean skipping the dam, but would break up the run to Macon a bit?? :D

This puts me off driving in France

READ THIS IF DRIVING IN FRANCE SOON - Gumball / Le Mans / Cannes

Apparently these are the new laws for driving in France, just in time for Gumball:

1. any excess speed more than 30mph over the prevailing limit will incur a fine of 3,750 euros and the car/bike impounded. see 3.

2. the offence has now been uprated to a serious crime, and punishable with up to five years in prison

3. the vehicle will be confiscated and sold for state funds

4. Any use of a mobile phone will incur a fine of 135 euros on the spot

5. Motorcyclists must from hereon wear a high viz jacket at all times

6. The alcohol limit has remained at 0.5 grammes, not reduced to 0.2 as thought

7.The request to reduce the maximum speed limit in town to 20mph has not been applied

May I respectfully ask that he spends at least 30 mins handcuffed to Benny in the Dam.

Is that new info on french speeding.? the only info that I can find (which is still pretty draconian)is from
http://english.controleradar.org/speeding-fines.php
As you can see it is 3750 euros on 2nd offence but as you say may have changed.

Our experience is 90 euros on the spot fines for speeding on the motorway. That corresponds to the 135 euros with early-payment discount. Even when it's plausible that the actual speed might have been higher than 130+50=180km/h = 112mph, they have tended to fine the 90 euros rather than move on to next level. I know this is not always the case - pretty sure Kell/Penny got hit for more than that and he did once get an instant ban too. IMHO 100mph is plenty fast to be travelling on the motorway so my advice is carry a couple of hundred euro in fine money and treat it like petrol ... if you want to drive faster than that, be prepared for the big penalties.

I tend to drive at <90mph and have yet to be stopped for speeding in France.

The police tend to be more hidden with mobile speed traps on bridges and police motorcycles sent to chase you down. I reckon if 30 cars do 100mph for 3,000 miles at least 5 of them will be caught during the week; that is the normal fall out on a FF trip - 90 euros is a couple of rounds of beer, so not the end of the world ;-)

Cheers,
Robin
