optium track speeds
optium track speeds
this might be in the wrong section but
on most tracks / sprints and hillclimbs what top speeds are folk getting upto and at what spec
espicaly anyone who has had 170-180 bhp with a c/r box (tut's qed )
trying to fathom out optium diff ratio for a c/r box
is 130 mph enough for the longer tracks
cheers bob

With that spec maybe 120 mph max at Knockhill. Not sure about Lossiemouth or East Fortune but I reckon 130 gearing would be fine. All the other sprint and hillclimb tracks are much slower top speed, maybe 90 mph max.
As for other tracks, depends on how far you want to go. Considering tracks I've done:
Cadwell, Oulton, Donington you'd probably be just OK with 130 mph max.
Spa, and Dijon you'd defo run out of revs...
This is all a bit of guesswork based on my experience sprinting/hillclimbing in a 160bhp S2 111S and/or tracks in a 190bhp S2 Exige or 150bhp S1...all with differrent ratios/weights etc...

highest speeds i have seen on track are at Snetterton, Spa, Dijon, Zandvoort and the nurburgring.
In my 220bhp honda, i get over 140mph. Outside of those 5 tracks, i dont get over 130mph, so you should be fine with that.
For reference, a 160bhp elise with CR box only managed 125mph on those same circuits

thanks all
thats just the info i wanted , i will be using quaife ratios so slightly lower 5th than a lotus c/r box hence 130 @7000 rpm ( lotus c/r is 140 )
but have the option of fitting a 3.9 diff that would give me the missing 10 mph however i will be sticking with the 4.2
tut did the lotus c/r box rev out to its max with 180 bhp or was it a long wait eg quick upto 115 /4th then dull performance thereafter
and did it make such a huge differance over a std box you had, as i see on lotus bbs you where keen to get a c/r box all them years ago
only with the mgtf box it pulls to 115 no probs in 4th however its long 5th spoils the acceration thereafter, being geared for 155mph max ( makes a nice road box thou imo )

In my opinion a C/R box on any S1 Elise is probably the best initial upgrade that you can do, as long as you are willing to accept the higher revs when cruising in 5th on Motorways, which I soon got used to.
However I have always tracked my car and done lots of fast road runs, Stelvios etc, so it suited me. 5th becomes a much more useful gear, especially combined with more power, and I could accelerate all the way upto Duffus braking point at KH.
The first two mods that I did on both of my cars when I bought them were Leda suspension, would now be Nitrons, and C/R boxes.
