Track Day Insurance

Post by StiflerMR2 » Mon Feb 22, 2010 6:46 pm

Hello all,

I'd really like to take the Clio out on track this year. My other track cars have either been sheds (old 944) or such nice handling machines (RX8)that I never felt the need for cover during trackdays.

However, as the Clio has a bit of an 'unpredictable' nature I'd quite like the security blanket of having track day cover for the odd occasion I venture out on track with it this year.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to the best people to speak to about just such a thing?

TIA,

-Mark.

I went with Competition Car Insurance, 4 track days included in the policy and the second cheapest quote I got.

Looking forward to seeing the V6 Clio going round Knockhill always fancied one

Sorry should have been clearer.

I'm not looking for a full year policy - just day cover :)

Bend over then...

Totally uncompetitive - usually several times the cost of the TD per insured day. Get a policy that covers TDs, or risk it (unless you like throwing a couple of hundred pounds at an insurance company for a day policy that covers practically nothing)

True, but I would rather outlay a couple of hundred pounds and have piece of mind for the day than a couple thousand pounds should the worst happen.

Off course as you rightly point out, that would depend on what they do and don't cover. Knowing insurance companies I guess it will not be a lot.

I'll ring around a few and see what they say. My insurance isn't due for renewal until September so getting a new policy which covers trackdays is a bit of a non starter.

Perhaps also do the sums about cancelling current policy, taking the fee and swapping to someone like CCI (who include TDs) versus cost of day cover x the amount of TDs you see yourself doing.

Is there not a 28 day "cooling off" period on policies these days?

It's one thing not crashing - perhaps something that gifted are in total control of :P - but I have now seen a couple of incidents where innocent cars have been damaged with contact through no fault of their own. One of those was at Le Mans last year. Not sure if they were insured or not and it was a caterham so some quality bodging saw the innocent party back in action later that day IIRC. Would have been totally crap if it was a elise/exige and uninsured and unable to make the trip home.

I like my insurance but so far it has been included in my annual policy (Heritage)

I think one-off cover is usually priced around 1% of the car's value, with an excess of 10%.

You need to assess the likelihood of an incident being so severe that the cover would be worthwhile.

Not that gifted. I know my limits :)

Also, been on many track days where people have lost it in front of me, if they had spun one way it would have been a crash, fortunately they spun the other. As Stewart says, not just protection against myself, but also from others.

I assume your current insurer won't even entertain extending your existing policy?
