Track day noise level
Track day noise level
I've just booked Spa for Saturday 13th October through their website, but not sure about the 105db noise limit.
I have never had my noise level taken, it's a 220 Exige S with Lotus stage 3 exhaust and TRD box, does anyone know roughly if I will be safe, over or borderline?
Cheers
Kenny

You will be fine.

I've never seen a Lotus fail a noise check at Spa. If you're concerned, just remember 2/3 of max revs is 4,000

What distance is that level measured at Kenny? If at the standard 0.5m, that is the normal level for race saloons in UK, so should be achievable.
Where about are you based? I'm in Fife and will be up at Knockhill this Sunday with my noise meter if you want to get it checked.
Failing that, there's a iPhone sound meter App that gives a reasonably close reading. Just make sure you're on A-Weighting and hold the microphone 0.5m away from the exhaust outlet at 45 degrees to the car. Also make sure the car is fully up to temperature and keep the clutch pressed to reduce the gearbox noise.
As a last resort, follow Tut's lead and lie about the rev limit

Re: Track day noise level
Sounds reassuring then, thanks for that.
Renny- I have the car in Paris with me just now or could have had it checked.
The website says:
"maximum sound level of 105 dB at 1 metre from the exhaust, at 45 degrees, with the engine running at 75% of the maximum rpm"
But of course 75% of max RPM is ~4000, that will be my approach
When I have taken Porsche Carrera Cup cars through scrutineering before there is a dummy map on the stack dash showing RPM, everyone is up to it

Renny you urchin, how the devil did you know that?

I'd be amazed if you were over 98db with that set up.
105db is stupidly loud - you'd need a broken exhaust to fail that

Also 1m distance will knock about 3dB off, so equiv to 107-8 at 0.5m. Definitely loud at that
