Having watched the round stainless towing eye quickly become elliptical when the car was recently towed I have just ordered two of these stainless lifting eye bolts from eBay for £3.50.
It is load rated to 2200kg and has a 20mm internal diameter, so easy to snap a caribiner through.

A2 Stainless Steel Lifting Eye BOLTS Specifications M8 - Internal Diameter - 20mm - Thread Length - 15mm - Overall Height Including Thread 50mm - Break Load 2200kg

Just be careful that you don't rip the tow post out of the front crash structure, mangling it and the clam in the process though.

There's a reason the tow eye is a weak design - it's a failure point before something far far more expensive goes...

Good point!
Pros and cons though. If it goes I'd rather it mangled the clam a little than it go for a backwards run all on its own!
I have a new SS post and fixings so it should be ok on mine now.

Ive a rear tow point which would be my first choice if I end up in the kitty litter, which is bolted on under the diffuser, but I made this bar the hoop out of a mismatch of bits just incase I got bellied out in the gravel and I couldn't get to the rear tow point. It's foldable too.

Ive got one of those towing eyes - they look good - i bought the anodised black one - however the hook for the tow truck wont fit through it.
also, the thread could be doing with at least 10mm longer.

look good - but useless.
