Another Posh Trackday

Post by hendeg » Wed Mar 07, 2007 8:18 pm

Somehow I've managed to avoid track driving all my life. Nobody as even got me a driving experience as a present :( .

It's not all doom and gloom - I've been invited to the Ferrari Challenge sponsors day at Silverstone in a couple of weeks :o .

My problem is that I need to get some idea of what I should be doing on the track without actually going on one! I don't want to look like a complete twat on the day.

Does anyone have any idea where I can find out how to drive? Any websites, etc.

Cheers,
Gary.

Come to Knockhill on Saturday morning and get some passenger laps, that's probably the best thing you can do to see how people drive on track.

Why don't you want to actually go on one first? Best way to learn :-)

It's in a couple of weeks and I don't have time to fit one in. I would love to go to Knockhill this weekend but I've already got plans too.

[Edit: I just re-read your post and it's not obvious to me whether you're driving your own car or doing sessions in their cars - if the latter, it will be with an instructor and they usually love people to drive slowly in their expensive cars - in any case they will keep you on the straight and narrow, so don't lose any sleep over it].

Depending on the kind of learner that you are, you may be able to read it all in a book - better yet get hold of the carlimits.com DVD which I have never seen, but if it's anything like him teaching you personally it will help you a lot.

However, most people need to practice it in order to get good at it. So I suggest you go to silverstone as a complete novice (put your hand up when they ask "who here hasn't been on track before" in the briefing) and try and get some tuition from one of their instructors. At your level, even the worst instructor will get a lot from you.

Driving on track is safe if you're sensible and you will soon be lapping within 10% of what you will ever achieve, so don't worry about holding people up, etc., just stay calm.

Never driven SS in real life (TOCA2 is quite good for it though) and it's the sort of place where fast powerful cars will have no worries passing you on the plentiful straights.

Cheers,
Robin

Thanks for the advice Robin. I just like to be a little bit prepared.

The cars we'll be using are 360 Challenge and F430s with a Fiorano Ferrari instructor. I friend on mine hired the F430 spider from Rio last year. I was only a passenger but I absolutely loved in. I can't wait to get to drive one :drive.

We had the same invite last year at Goodwood, but my better half managed to somehow persuade me that she should go :? . She said that it was full on Ferrari hospitality including lovely girls to greet you on arrival. She'd done a couple of training sessions at Knockhill beforehand so was a bit prepared.

I'll take loads of pics.
